Hi I'm making fish pie and have some mixed fish/shellfish just wanted to check if there's anything I need to pick out for LO's mini portion. the general fish does include some smoked haddock which I think has been dyed from looking at it, do I need to take this out or is it ok?

I also have a pack of mixed prawns, mussels and squid which I usually put in. My annabel karmel book say no shellfish until 1 year but my NHS booklet seems to just say no raw shellfish until 1 year so I would have thought this would be OK as they're cooked anyway plus I cook it again. I was probably only going to put prawns in his from the shellfish packet as he's not had any of them before and if there is a problem I want to know which one it's with...

Thanks :flower:

AFAIK, there isn't supposed to be shellfish, cooked or raw, before a year because of potential allergy issues....?

Thanks for info. I see your in the US do you/anyone know if the advice i is the same in the UK? Thanks

well this is obviously a much harder question than I thought - have ploughed through the nhs weaning stuff I have and none of it says when he can have it it's just listed in the "if you're starting before 6 months food to avoid category." Rang my HV to check and was told she'd need a few minutes to check and she'd get back to me - that was 4 hours ago! have made his pie without prawns as I wasn't certain but want to know for next time!!!

I would assume it would be safe for babies less than a year.. just think about babies in other countries where fish, shellfish etc. is a staple in their diet? Our LO has had different types of fish but not shellfish yet... hopefully your HV will get back to you :)

After 6 hours of intermittent research by my HV for anyone else UK based I now have the answer! (who knew fish pie was such a minefield???) Her initial response had been "it's too soon" however when she's looked it up it's fine after 6 months as long as it's cooked but they recommend going carefully with it and not giving anything else new the same day so you can see if there's a reaction.

Smoked fish? Who knows I couldn't bear to ask her after the minefield that shellfish turned out to be!

It's fine after 6 months according to UK advice. The only things that aren't recommended are raw fish or shellfish because not only is there a poisoning risk but sometimes there are parasites that are not harmful to older kids and adults as they are destroyed by chewing (gross I know!) but babies don't chew thoroughly enough to kill them should they be present. All of mine have had prawns at about 6 months and no problems whatsoever xx
