hello, just a quick (EDIT=sorry its actually very long and rambly) question, i took violet for a check up with the health visitor on monday and her weight gain isnt much..
at birth she was 3.080 kg, at 6 weeks 4.24 kg, 15 weeks 5.16, then monday (18 weeks old) she was 5.39kg so not much weight gain and it looks like she has gone from 25th percentile now heading towards the 2nd percentile?
the HV wasnt too worried but i felt she wasnt really paying attention to me properly (i was her last appointment of the day) ie she didnt ask me any questions about how she is getting on, i mentioned she was still only having 3-4 really wet nappies a day and only poos every other day (least its not green anymore!) but she wasnt concerned as i also took her to be checked by Dr 3 weeks ago when i noticed the lack of loads of wet nappies as she gave her a clean bill of health.. she just said come back in a month..
shes got chubby legs but is quite slim around the belly, now im worrying shes not getting enough from me, no-one has suggested supplenting or anything, although she has suddenly developed a real interest in our food and i gave her some calpol last night and for the first time ever she went mental for it and seemed to want more!! does this mean she could be ready for some food? i am exclusively BF her since birth, havent been able to get her to take a bottle at all!
she is still waking sometimes every 2-3 hours in the night for food (growth spurt?) i dont mind i wil do whatever she needs, but iam so tempted to just try her on a small amount of baby rice to see if she wil take it? she nevers seems to cry for hunger but will polish off both boobs in one sitting often then want more a coupe of hours later, im just really unsure of what to do?? my instincts are telling me she is ready (shes nearly 5 months now) she can hold her head up, has the pincer grip etc..
if anyone has any ideas or suggestions i would be very grateful!!
also is her lack of weight gain anything to be worried about? now i feel guilty for not having her weighted religiously every week like i should have to keep better track of it!

Have you tried her with some finger foods? If she'll do the pincer it might be worth a try?

Don't worry about weight gain, it slows down around then. Check her weight on the breastfeeding chart that's stickied in the main breastfeeding section x

Personally I would say it's way too soon. Others would disagree. :)

thanks i havent tried any food yet as was concerned its too early, i know guidelines are 6 months tho my mates just started weaning her LO at 12 weeks, i know lots of people who do so its very confusing! my OH thinks im just being a worrier.. i think i will keep going as i am for another couple of weeks first..
so do you think the lack of loads of wet nappies is ok? it literally is only 3-4 every day and they're not too heavy? (although she al.most always has a wee when im changing her too!) her fontella's not sunken and she always has plenty of tears when crying & drools horrendously!!
im sorry prob shouldve posted this elsewhere like babys & toddlers or weaning section? but cos im BF was worryed about the lack of weight gain mainly..
again thanks for the help xx

Finger foods no way... sorry but I think 18 weeks is way early... Some people are into finger foods, I dont think giving the finger stuff too early is a good idea... and in canada its not recommended to start until 7 or 8 months with them...

Starting with rice cereal mixed with bm or formula is the best thing, it is the least likely to cause an allergic reaction.

I started weaning early at 3 months with rice cereal, then veggies, then fruit... took it really slow and am just starting to think about finger foods.

Each to their own.... that is just my opinion.

is she generally happy? tbh it sounds to me like she's ok as she is, weight gain does slow down. but youmight want to start with a bit of baby rice. i started katie on it at 11 weeks, but she was a very hungry baby. i'd keep an eye on her weight and stuff and jsut play it by ear. i'm a big believer of you know your own baby. whats right for one baby isnt right for another and i think only mummy really knows!! hope everything sorts itself out xx
