Anyone else gaving a caesarean due to previous shoulder dystocia x

I haven't had shoulder dystocia but they want me to have a section as i'm high risk for shoulder dystocia.
I have gestational diabetes and baby measuring 4,600g ( so they say)
I hope you don't think i'm being rude and feel free not to answer but i just wandered about the shoulder dystocia. How was it for you and baby? The docs have terrifed me with it :-(

Well I had it with both my boys, they were not massive babies 8lb 3 and 8lb 6 but it was the size if their shoulders that was the problem. With my first I didn't really know anything about it till after but come away with large 2nd degree tears, with my 2nd everyone knew about ut so were watching out for it, his head delivered and the midwife noticed he was stuck (his shoulder visable but not deliverable) so I switched to mcroberts procedure and thankfully he came out, he was very bruised around his face and needed oxygen but he was ok I had another large 2nd degree tear. What I'm worried about this time is the complications that can happen. So I don't think it's deffinately the size of the baby but how your shaped also, I have the option of induction at 38 weeks or elective Caesarian and I also have no idea what to do, have you had a previous births? We're they ok? X x

Kirski - what position were you in to give birth? Being on your back can reduce the size of your pelvis and make dystocia much more likely. If you've given birth naturally twice, I'd look into active labour, good positioning and so on, rather than elect for major surgery. Have you considered a doula or someone to support you through another labour?

With my first I was active during labour but he came out head facing up not sure if that makes a difference and my second I had an epi so was on my side, I would rather have a vaginal birth, I wasn't keen on the epidural (didn't like not being able to move around after) I'm just worried about the birth. X

Thank you so much for sharing your experience.
I have a 3 year old daughter who i was induced with gestational diabetes at 38 weeks. I was 4 cm dilated so straight to having my waters broken. Had the sentocin(sp) drip at 1 or 2 o'clock. Had an epidural at 5.45 which took 45 mins to do.At 6.50 was saying i could still feel it but the midwife said things had changed. I was fully dilated. Kicked myslef for not having let them check me before the epidural. Started pushing her head out at 8pm. Delivered head at 8.15 and 30 seconds later her body. She weighed 7lb 9. I delivered her on my back!!
It's because this one weighs 4,600g yesterday (38 weeks) and i am on insulin for the gestational diabetes. They say i am high risk for shoulder dystochia with high bmi at booking in, over 4,500g, being induced and gestational diabetes. They now won't support an induction which was booked for Monday and say if i go into labour before i should have an emergency section :-(

Oh I see, so they won't induce you at all now?

I still do have my appointment as the labour ward said the can't just leave me.My consultant said they can't support an induction and i should have a section either emergency if i go into spontaneous labour or an elective on tuesday. 2 weeks ago he was ok with natural labour it's because i've gone over the guidelines by NICE bu 100g

Oh I see did they get the weight estimate from a scan if so they can be pretty far out sometimes, how stressful right before your due to give birth as well!

Yes had a scan yesterday. Midwife felt baby an dsays doesn't seem that big but lots and lost fluid. Very stressful.
How are you getting on with your decision? My friend who is a midwfie says she has never had a shoulder dystochia with people who deliver on all fours or upright. Being on your back definitely adds more risk.

I don't really want a c section, the recovery and complications put me off and I have two little boys to look after as well lol
I have heard a lot of positive c section stories though where recovery was quite easy......
As long as the baby dosent get too big I think I might go with getting indused and try and stay as active as I can, I'm only 20 weeks so I've got a little while to make my mind up, we have our scan on Monday so hopefully baby will show what it is lol

Hi, I just had a c-section 3 weeks ago due to previous shoulder dystocia and third degree tear. Although it was elective cs, it turned to emergency as i went into labour a week before it was booked, when i got to the L&D i got checked and was between 7 and 9 cms, so they tried to convince me vaginal was a good option as i was so close, but i found the idea very distressing after my first birth, so they whipped me down for a section. I believe it was the right decision for me, but recovering from this section has not been easy, and was probably on a par with the recovery from my third degree tear. If the tear had not happened on my first, and it was just the shoulder dystocia risk, i would more than likely gone for a vaginal delivery. good luck with your decision x

Have a look at the RCOG guidelines on shoulder dystocia. If you type it in google you can click on the full guideline and have a read, it is really informative and should help you make an informed decision x

Thank you are these uk or us guidelines, I've just had my 20 week scan and I also have a anterior low lying placenta, just touching the cervix :-(

My dd had it but they said it was more her position ... ?

But she was 7lbs 10oz and I'm petite, none the less they are not worried it will happen again at all.

:flower:

Oh no. There is still some time for it to move. These are UK guidelines, but the information on shoulder dystocia will be the same. It gives really good info about relation to birthweight etc and then compares incidinces of brachial plexus injury at section and vaginal shoulder dystocia xx

Evening ladies .

I'm in the same boat here I've got an appt Monday to see what I decide I had a shoulder dystocia with my little girl she 3 now she was 10.4 stuck for 13 minutes lost 9 minutes of oxygen and was dead on arrival they had to do CPR or whatever it's called she had a broken shoulder and arm and erbs palsy in the other I was induced at 38 odd as well I developed a liver problem you only get in pregnancy had stupidly high tempatures through labour and after I had to have my placenta surgically removed ....I'm really surprised though cause throughout I've seen my midwife 4 times and every time they have been different they listened in once and checked measurements twice not discussed any of my options even though I tried bringing it up ...couldn't tell you what position bby was in or any of the stuff you normally know ..they must be shit in my area lol ....I'm bit nervous bout the c section though if they say to defo have it just cause of the needle I'm a big wimp lol and having to deal with my 3 year old after ..straight away I'm gonna have to be doing stuff like taking her nursery etc etc I'm a single mum you see and can you even get in any other position when you've had an epidural apart from on your back :)

Hi Siobhan, I'm really surprised no one has gone over your previous birth it's sounds very scary. I saw a consultant at 12 weeks because I've had this with both my previous children, my babies were only 8lb3-8lb6, I spoke to my midwife today and she said I was at a higher risk of it happening again, I have a scan in 8 weeks (36 weeks) and then I will decide how I'm having my baby x

Hi, I had sd with both children. Both big babies. Dd 9lbs 4 oz, ds 10lbs 10.5 oz. Ds had a collapsed lung and had to b rescussitated and go to nicu when he was born. So I asked this time if baby shows big at 34 week growth scan, can I have a section. Consultant said if I decide I want cs I can have 1. Will decide at 34weeks.

Hi that's the kind of thing I'm going along with, my scan is not till 36 weeks though :-)
