Silly question

I can do a good valley accent :)
I often have a NZ accent and I blaim my friend for that if iv been talking to her.
If I try doing any other accent though it ends up sounding realy mascaline, I cant do a femanine accent :)

Also why is it (dont know if anyone else finds this) when watching American tv they never seem to actualy have an accent yet when you meet someone from that area you notice it straight away.
Im assuming because of drama training they are probably trained to nutralise accents to appeal to a wider audiance

hahaha i'm from california so I don't think I have an 'accent' lol but one of my old boyfriends was from Boston and I still keep in touch with all of his family....and when i've been talking to them I find i've picked it up and now some of the words or phrases have stuck with me. I say wicked a lot and Caaar. When I was on the East coast his family told me to fit in I had to learn "park my car in harvard yard" It's hard to explain on the internet but if you know east coast you will know what i'm talking about lol.

"Pahk the cah in Hahvahd Yahd" oh god! my friends make me say this allll the time. Wicked is huge word in my vocab! All the R's become A's, and all the AH's become ER's. When my family says my name fast they say "Hanner" or for example my fathers says pizza like "pete-zer"

Samgames23: I live in the Portland area! I love it.

I'm Canadian lol and I think there are a few types of American accent.. there's Southern, New York??, and one in the Midwest...
I think it's easiest to hear the different twangs when you're from that country. I can name a load of accents from the UK, but America, Canada etc? I can tell the difference between Bronx, deep south, Bostonian, New England and Latino (don't know where they're from, but I know they're Spanish speakers). I was told that Canadians say "eh" a lot, but I can't tell the difference in a Canadian accent and American, unless I hear words like "couch" because as far as I'm aware, Canadian is prn more like "cooch"

I can tell the difference in Aussie and Kiwi accents, because an Aussie would say "tesco" and NZ would say "tisco". I have issues differentiating NZ from South African accents though

As for speaking; I can fake an Aussie, Scottish and London accent, but that's about it. If you judge your own accent you may think you can pronounce it well, but if an American judged it, they would probably fall about laughing. A load of my cousins who grew up in Mainland Europe speak English with an American accent, because they grew up with the Simpsons with subitles  No offence, but I think it's a shame when they have american accents, opposed to the normal accent from their country when they speak English. Like a French person speaking English sounds wonderful. It would be sad to lose that, I think

LOL, when we went to the States, I was telling people my name was Lara, and they were calling me Laura the whole time. I was like, "no, LARA", but it was still Laura. I didn't bother pronouncing it like they would have done ("Larrah" I guess), I should have just said "like Lara Croft" :haha:.

My inlaws live in Bend Oregon. And in a few years...like 4 lol, my OH and I wanna move to the coast we love it down there so much, we're thinking the new port area. =)

They do faux New York/Mobster accents on TV commercials here and it's hilarious, to me at least, as I can hear the kiwi accent through it. I've done the Boston accent for people at work (I'm from Oregon) but they can't tell the difference as easily as an American English speaker.

I always try to do a south african accent (where OH is from) but i'm rubbish...... as with all accents lol :)

I heard that on tv, they try to do a midwest accent.

I think californians have an accent. It's hard to describe. Arkansas ppl do as well. Theirs are different than southerners. Oh, and if I didn't travel down south often, I would have no clue what soda is. I always laugh when I hear it. Soda, soda, soda... :) It's "pop" where I'm from.

I've been told I have a northern accent, even though I'm from the midwest. When I went to Europe, ppl thought I was Spanish. I must have pulled off some Spanish-English accent or Spanish-French accent.

I was amazed of how many accents there are in the UK - being such a small area (compared to the US)

I am Welsh and therefore cannot do any accents at all apart from my own :haha:
