Hey

I am really torn on either to us SMA GOLD or Aptamil
I just dont know what one to use, whats everyone else using or have used what they can recommend!

thanks for reading

xxxx

i think its trial and error! i breast fed dd then moved on to aptamil which was fine but then she got sick n after she was sick she just couldnt stomach aptamil, i tried her on SMA but it crucified her and she was in so much pain so i went to cow and gate n she stayed on that til she was 1!

it depends on the baby really but both my sisters use aptamil for 5 kids n never had problems! xx

i never heard of aptamil until last year- my mom always used SMA and my boss told me he'd sworn over sma gold when his two sons were babies, so when i finish breast feeding,or if hes a hungry chappie i think ill go with sma, it seems its been around for so long! lol xxxx

I've not used any but heard so many negative things about SMA, so I won't be using that as a first try. I'll be using Cow and Gate as all my family have and they've not said anything bad about it. I've not heard anything bad about Aptamil and it's supposed to be close to breastmilk too :flower:

u will jus have to try them and see how ur baby reacts, some are more sensitive than others. my nephew started on aptamil but he was only pooing once every other day so in pain a lot, so was moved onto SMA and been fine and regular ever since.
But others will struggle with sma, so just try and see how it goes

Same reason here, we had sma when we were kids its been round for ages, but so has aptamil but ive only just heard off it, tho ive read some really good reviews on that brand so now im torn!

ah thats the other one, cow&gate, i think thats slightly cheaper than sma isn't it too? i guess as AP said its trial and error :)

Cow and gate and aptamil are exactly the same, they're produced in the same factory. The marketing is done in such a way to make aptamil seem more "Premium" than the rest.

We used SMA for top ups when I first had DD as I combination fed her and it was fine. I have no experience of long term FFing though

Is it ok to switch milk, i thought it might upset them by swapping milk

I only seen cow and gate in one shop over here lol, yes its the cheapest! its expensive the powder a small tub is 6 euros here and the large tubs are 12 euros, how much is it over your end? i cant remember it being that expensive over there!

I think it depends on the baby and which formula suits them best. With our first we used sma gold after breastfeeding didn't work :( to be fair we never had any problems with it and now we have gone through all stages of sma with him and we are now on the toddler milk! Pretty loyal to sma now so will be using it for bump too :)

a big tub is about £7.50 for cow and gate, aptamil can be like £9.50 n it adds up! i found aptamil was finer than cow and gate!

its not wise to swap them all the time but if u change the milk for a few days then its ok, baby might have a different reaction to it but will soon get used to the new milk if its ok. if not then you will no about it thru their poo etc x

When I worked on the premi baby Unit the staff there used both sma and aptimil but the general opinion on the unit was that aptimil was the better of the 2. But like others have said I think it depends on each baby and what they tolerate best xxx

Aptamil is great  My LO was on it from about 5 weeks (when I stopped b/f) & is now on the 'grwoing up milk'

HV said she had heard of alot of constipation with SMA

Heaay
Hope you don't mind me butting in. My daughter was on Aptamil since being around 2 months old upto a year, and she never had a single problem with it.

My sister coincidentally used SMA and her daughter didnt take to it very well, she couldnt keep it down and the health provider woman suggested she use Aptamil as sma could have been a bit rich for her. And she's never had a problem with Aptamil.

Like everyone has said though every baby is different. Good luck :)

When thinking about formula you need to to conaider whats going to be easiest on LOs digestive system. Yes, sma gold has been around a looong time but I know LOTS of babies have had issues with it being too harsh. I mean yeah some babies are fine on it. I used Aptamil with Kyle and unfortunately he got colic but it was not due to the milk as Aptamil is the easiest milk on the market to digest, which is why 90% of mws and hvs recommend it. I switched Kyles milk when he got colic (against hvs advice), to sma comfort and it was the worst mistake ever, he was 10x worse on it so I switched back to Aptamil and soon realised that his colic was unavoidable. Just my opinion, im planning to bf this time but should any problems arise etc i would use Aptamil again, no question.

Also, wanted to point out. Ladies, stop wasting your money on toddler milk!! After my hv mentioned this to me I went and did some research.. Yes its full of goodness but they dont need it if they have a balanced diet! Cows milk is ample along with a healthy diet, hv told me they only recommend toddler milk to those whos babies are fussy eaters etc so not getting a balanced enough diet. When I found all this out I stopped buying the toddler milk, the money we've saved is unreal and my boy is still very healthy. Apparently all the companies are doin is maximising money making, knowing parents want the best for their kids, and make us think their milk is it.

With my 1st I gave her SMA as it was what I had as a baby and she was fine on it.

With my 2nd I breastfed for a while and when he had SMA he got constipated so he had Aptamil in the end. I agree the powder is much finer, don't know if that's anything to do with the constipation

This time I will probably go for Aptamil again.

xx

i used both at first but stuck with SMA gold. Never had any problems with it. Only didnt use the other as it was alot more expensive.
Found cow and gate really sweet

I used SMA Gold with first as thats what hospital provided and didnt have any problems.
With my second i started on SMA and Aptimal but my DS was lactose intollerant so had to use SMA LF which had on prescription which worked.
This time iv brought a tin of SMA again. When i was trying to find the right formula for my son someone told me Aptimal an cow an gate where the same company????? Not sure how true this is
