Ok after 10 weeks of horrible colic.... 3 milk changes... infant gaviscon.... water between feeds! I was at the end of my tether!!

HV advised on thurs to try SMA lf... (lactose free) now its more expensive and half the size of normal milk but I thought it was worth the go!! My HV said if I notice a difference in her in 48 hours then that is the problem!!

And OH MY GOD!!! I am enjoying her so so much!! She hasnt had a colic episode since friday (which obviously lactose was still in her system)!! Now when I saw colic... it was horrendous... it was about 3 times a day.... screaming... stiffness... her legs and arms kicked out and the noise was defeaning!! She looked like she was in REAL pain!! My mum was horrified when she saw her!!

She gets the SMA lf on perscription now and life is brill!! Shes so so much happier!! She no longer screams... not even for her food!! And shes only having 5oz a feed of this milk instead of the 6oz so her reflux isnt as bad!! God its great not having a constant bib on her!!!

Just thought I would share :yipee:

But some advise from other mums with a lactose intolerant baby please..... when did you try them on lactose again?? My HV said sometimes its not that they are actually intolerant but that their stomachs cant handle it this young!! I dont want to end up making her intolerant by not weening her back on it at any point!!

awww thats great new, thanks god u found out what is was

Great to hear that! For a while I thought Tegan was lactose intolerant.. Had a bad episode a few weeks back but she seems to have grown out of it. No advice RE weaning back onto lactose.. Ask your HV xx

Ethan was lactose intolerant, but it was his skin that it affected. He ended up on Wysoy, as even the LF one agravated it.

We gradually weened him back onto cows milk from about 18 months, and now he is fie with it. He still suffers with eczema now and then, but nowhere near as bad as he was. :D

Hey kerry, lil jacob has just been prescipbed this too but got to wait till tomorrow till they get it in. Ive been to hell and back the past 4 weeks he has been in pain since day one. And finally a doc today said he is almost 99% sure its a lactose intolerance!! So here's hoping this will help.

How long did it take for you to start to notice the difference??

Jacob is throwing up most feeds have done for weeks and been put on baby gaviscon too also be told he had colic since day 1 and had projectile runny poo since 5days old, and it took till now for someone to take notice that all this wasnt right.

Hope courtney's ok :) XXXX

glad to hear courney is better. poor wee mite must have been in terrible pain.
i thought ali was lactose intolerant as he would have awful fits of crying but they have eased off with age and he doesn't suffer from bad wind now (he is easy to wind etc) and he no longer seems to be in pain.

i hope it continues for you.

thats wonderful news honey, so happy for you both, enjoy your princess sweetie :hugs:x x x

I think its a very individual thing, Mark was just like you described Courtney when he was a baby (according to MIL) he is still intollerant to cows milk now, some babies 'grow into it' so to speak

Glad Courtney is feeling better

Thats fantastic news!! Glad you have a happy baby x

sounds like the same baby lol! I noticed a difference almost straight away!! On friday she had 2 feeds of it (cos it had to be ordered in) and then had a really bad colicy episode then since her 3rd feed on in shes been fab!!

Ive stopped baby gavisicon now it just makes her constipated!!

I came out of my surgery crying on thursday ... my doc didnt want to know when I mentioned lactose intolerant... but HV disagreed and advised it and look the doc was wrong!!
I wish I had pushed earlier now... cos she must have been in pain to scream as much as she did!! My HV saw her once having a bad episode and she was that concerned she told me to book an emergency doc appointment (this was at 5 weeks old) but of course when doc saw her she was fine!!

Im just glad its sorted now!!

Glad it's helped. But wait til she starts drooling everywhere, you will need a bib change every 30 mins

So, so glad you have got things sorted.
Kian was lactose intolerent, but didn't start to have problems until i weaned him at 6 months. He used to get the worst diarreah (sp!) i have ever seen, he would be covered from head to toe. He also used to scream with tummy ache.
I can't really help with looking after a baby with lactose intollerence but if you need any help when you get to weaning then let me know.
Kian is 3 1/2 and is almost on a normal diet. However he can only tollerate semi skimmed cows milk and low fat yoghurts and puddings.
If i was you i'd keep Courtney on the lactose free milk and wouldn't rush to swop her back to regular milk.
When you do get to the weaning stage be careful what you give her because loads of foods you would least expect contain lactose/milk protein, you have to check the labels on everything.
Am happy to help however i can xx

I went through a similar thing with the milk with Sebastian. He is now on prescription SMA Wysoy for his eczema. He kept having bad outbreaks and yhe seems to handle the soy milk so much better. I am glad things sorted themselves out.

must be a huge relief hun, glad she is much happier. Im gonig to see the HV today, becuase Im sure theres more to Kaitlins crying than just 'colic', she just isnt happy atall, never settled :-(
