I hadn't noticed the amount of looks I get being my age until the last 2 weeks cos I've gone out and about a bit more than usual.
But I've come up with a plan! I've found if you find some people gawping and pointing at your stomach whilst whispering to someone around them, you should catch their eye, stare and point at them, and pretend to whisper something to someone you're with (unless you're alone, then you look mental!) and they really don't like it. The amount of old women I made blush last week by doing this was unreal
And then I was waiting at the bank in a queue when the old women behind me was scowling at my bump, so I said "Afternoon" with a big grin to make it obvious I'd noticed her, and she started small talk like "How far along are you?"... "How old are you?" etc... and then started to say that I must be finding it difficult as a single teenage mother. Just like that, she ASSUMED the worst. So I said "Actually my OH is at work right now, and is an assistant business manager." which seemed to 'annoy' her, heaven knows why.
Then came "Oh, I'd have hated it if my kids had had children in their teens" so I asked her how old she was when she had her first and she said "17...but I was married!"... which I found hilarious cos I'm 18 and I don't think being married makes much of a difference to how you are as a parent.
So I asked her what made her think I wasn't married, at which point she looked down at my left hand and saw my rings. (I'm not actually married or engaged but I wear my mother's rings from her marriage to my biological father, and since getting fat pregnancy fingers, the only finger they fit is the marriage one) she then completely back-pedalled and was like "Oh, how lovely! No fights for whose surname to use then!" and I said "Nope, only one surname for our baby" ...which is technically true as my OH and I just happen to have same surname, as its quite common.
But I found the whole thing ridiculous. She was younger than me to have a baby yet before she thought I was married, she'd already formed a disapproving opinion.
Anyone else had this sort of thing? And other ways to deal with it? The whole saga was frustrating and I'm looking for some one-liners to use next time
