smear test while pregnant?

I'm due a smear but my MW said I will get it at my 6 week check after LO is born.
I did have to wee in a bottle that would be tested for infections etc though at my 16week appointment.

thanks for all the replies, I'm defanatly ringing the Dr's on monday and cancelling the appointment that they've made for me :D

Unfortunately I suffer with abnormal smear results and have had treatment and biopsies. I was due one in Feb, but because they may need to take a biopsy the safe time was between 26-32 weeks so I am booked in for May. I don't have a choice and TBH I am a little worried. If I didn't need it, I would have waited until after baby was here. xx

i didnt think they do smear test whilst pregnant,if you are due a test they should do it on your 6 week check.Thats what has happened tome in the past x

I also have abnormal cells. I have CIN 1 which is mild cervical dysplasia. I've had biopsies in the past also, and they wanted to do another cervical biopsy during this pregnancy which I refused. Its not proven to be safe during pregnancy, has a chance of miscarriage, and unless your pap came back showing increased dysplasia, it should be safe to postpone this procedure till after you deliver. Sorry if I've alarmed you I just feel like you should know there are risks, my doctor didnt tell me of them until I pried it out of her. I dont feel right being pushed into a procedure that may hurt my baby if its not completely nessesary. Also something to consider, many many cases of abnormal cells are cured after pregnancy. I think its around 50% .

Here in the US, it's very common to have them. I just had one (unfortunately!)

We do them here to check for abnormal cells, but also to check for Chlamydia and Ghonneria. If it comes back clean, then you can avoiid the eye drops required when the baby is born.

You can opt out of the eye drops anyhow. They just have you sign a form saying you refused them.

I had it done. Didn't have any problems, it wasn't any more uncomfortable than when I get a smear done before. No spotting. I would rather know something is wrong and be prepared to deal with it than keep my fingers crossed and rely on hope alone. I know A LOT of girl who have STD's I would never be able to forgive myself for passing that on to my LO. But thats just me. I can understand why people would worry. Mind you I've been with the same partner in a monogamous relationship for 8 years so STDs aren't really a concern!

Totally agree with this.

It's routine in Alberta for the 8-week prenatal to involve a full internal. They are trying to make all STD testing routine in pregnancy here to take the stigma out of it and because not all relationships may be as monogamous as the mum may think. (I'm not at all suggesting that this is case with you, Holly, just repeating what my doctor told me.) And as Holly says, I would way rather know about any possible diseases early on so that I could deal with them as soon as possible.
I had no problems whatsoever with my PAP smear on either pregnancy, and my understanding is that there is a very minimal increase of risk in miscarriage, if any. Everyone perceives risk differently, so maybe find some statistics and see if there is a good medical site that gives the pros and cons, but I certainly don't think a PAP test is cause for alarm. Why would they be routine in several countries if that was the case?

Just wanted to add that I just went on three separate pregnancy sites, all of them reputable, and all three of them stated that there is no increased risk in miscarriage from a pap smear whatsoever. Just FYI.
