First of all I'd like to say I'm a complete idiot, and secondly no comments confirming this please because I already know...and I have certainly learnt my lesson, I'm upset and annoyed with myself.

Since my lo was born I have disliked my travel system, found that its just so bulky and heavy, so wanted a new one...well second hand one. So went for a quinny buzz, someone locally was selling one, went to pick it up, all looked good so took it. We got home and realised it stank of stale smoke, I can't believe we didn't notice, it was only when I put my head close that I realised, have had a cold and today is the first time my nose is clear. So yeh now today has arrived I have realised it stinks, luckily you can remove all the fabric bits, so have done that, filled the bath up and washed them all, I even rewashed with fabric softener but it still smells. These people must have puffed smoke over the baby and pushchair, which I think is disgraceful.

The main part of it is outside on my airer, I just went and smelt it and it still smells. I dont know what to do.

I'm so annoyed with myself, I was so eager to get a new one and quickly (going to buggy fitness and knew it would be hard with my heavy pushchair...and I was right it was) that I just went for the first one I came along and quite obviously wasnt thorough with checking it, should have stuck my head in the pushchair and smelt, even if it had looked odd. How do I get rid of the smell? Just makes me feel sick, but these people live with that stink on them and around them all the time and obv think its ok...well its not its disgusting!!!

So wound up!!! I'm a bloody idiot!!

I really have learnt my lesson, I must have been walking around in a bubble thinking people just couldn't smoke like that around their children, I know they do, but its just so beyong belief to me that parents would do that to their children that I was very niave. I wanted to get my money back, but my hubby said no point asking cos they wont give it back.

Maybe it will improve once its dried. Its so nasty I keep imagining I can smell it wherever I go. Makes me want to be sick...I'm probably being abit dramatic but it is nasty.

maybe you should leave it outside for a few days spray it with fabric conditioner or in the bath? then leave it out hun hopefully the smell will go away i used to smoke but now i'm a non smoker and i have to say it smells pretty skank! someone gave me some clothes they bloody honked! xxx this is why i no longer smoke its ficking stinks and bad for my family but its well hard to stop :( my hubby still smokes! stink arse lol x

Keep leaving it out in the fresh air, and do you have fabric fresheners like febreeze in the UK? I would try something like that.

yeh when you dont smoke its such a strong smell, whereas to a smoker I'm sure it probably wouldn't be that bad.

I think I'm being abit of a drama queen lol!!!

I bought some and tried it but it kinda just got worse...stale smoke mixed with fabreeze...not the nicest smell in the world. Although perhaps if the smell isn't so strong abit of fabreeze will do the trick. Worth a shot. Thanks x

popping in  my aunty used to smoke and she gave my mum a cosy toes that reeeeeked of stale smoke, we washed in the bath twice & used salt & washing up liquid to try and get it out and it still smelt, we tried baking powder sprinkled over it for 24 hours and then hoovered it off and it worked :) just a suggestion x

I would suggest bicarbonate of soda/baking powder too. Leave it on then hoover off. Used to use it to get the smell of cat wee out of the carpet... if it works with cat wee then it must work with smoke. Cat wee really stinks! Good luck!

I'd leave it to soak in the fabric cleaner/conditioner water all day! x

I find with things like fabreze u hav to use it a few times xx

I agree with trying bicarbonate of soda. Can work really well on stains too :)

Get a REALLY strong conditioner - the strawberry confort is nice and strong, wash it in that and then use bi-carb, leave it in the bath for a long time to soak though, a day or so, and then wash it again in whatever softener you like x

Can any bits of it go in the washing machine on a hot (ish) wash. We were given a buggy which was dirty and was fine in the machine (sorry don't know much about Quinnys!) or try soaking in the bath with baby shampoo to give it that baby smell (rinse well) and leave to air outside. X

Definitely try bicarbonate of soda. I have also used this to get rid of the smell of cat wee which is one of the toughest stenches to shift!

This should actually get rid of the odour rather than just masking it. Good luck.

Ah thanks so much, so glad I posted this, would never have thought to have tried bicarbonate of soda. I will get some tomorrow. Was planning to give it another wash in the morning, seems that the hood is fine now, but the seat stinks still, I think its because of the material, its like a airtex material and seems the smell has got right into it.

Been in a right mood today cos of it, my hubby came in from work and I've just been snappy...all because I got in a strop about my stupidity at buying a stale smoke smelling pushchair.

Will use the bicarbonate of soda tomorrow, fingers crossed it works.

Thanks again. x

bicarb of soda all the way - air freshners and the like are just as poisonus as fag smoke (if not more!!!!!)

Yeh they dont tend to take away the odour they just add to it and you are left with a nasty smell, a mixture of fabreeze and stale smoke, its pretty nasty. :)

hey hun
ive got the quinny buzz too !! same birthday same buggy our boys really have a connection!! anyway im sure with a good airing it will get better have you tried a disinfectant ? like zoflora from wilkos make it up in a sprayer and spritz it all over the buggy and leave to dry. it will work wonders and smell lovely but dont pick a flowery scent unless addison wants to smell like roses !!!! xxx

Thanks Em, I'm going shopping tomorrow so will have a look for some zoflora. No wont get anything flowery, those kind of things tend to make it worse.

I'm looking forward to being able to use my quinny, I've pushed it around outside and its so light...thank goodness cos I've started going to buggyfit, and it almost killed me today. Not sure I will be able to walk tomorrow, legs are hurting already and its always worse the next day.

I've had to deal with all sorts of stinky fabrics in the past (i was a cleaner for a while), and the best thing I found was white vinegar. It's easiest to use in the washing machine, as it needs plenty of rinsing. I have successfully got rid of stale smoke smells this way before, and with rinsing, it does not smell of vinegar after.

Thank you, lots of things to try now to get that smell out. Least I know somehow I will get the smell out. Will give it a bash. Cheers.
