Smokers ......

Lets make them smokers shower before holding LOs, make them feel really dirty lol :haha:

(Only joking, I'm an ex smoker and ohhhhhhhhh so glad I quit!)xx

It's so dumb that people think it's over the top to protect your baby from 3rd hand smoke! I'm so happy the only person I know that's close to me and smokes is my dad, and he's trying to quit.

LOL, I wish that was realistic! I'd make my dad do it!

It's just my brothers and FIL that smoke now that I can think of... But they've been warned that smoking does indeed kill and they will have to additionally deal with broken bones if they smoke near LO  xx

I would like this to be the case but FOB smokes and all family and friends smoke, i wouldnt be able to get away from it if i tried. xx

Just thinking about anyone who smokes holding my baby really winds me up. I have friends who smoke, MIL, BIL and my own mother. She says she'll have quit before she meets baby but I'm not holding my breath. I will have a strict half hour rule in place and hand washing. Only those who I am very close to who smoke will get to hold baby so at least I can limit her exposure. If it could be avoided never have a smoker hold her at all. It's highly likely that being smoked around as a baby/child damaged my own hearing so I will not have my own child be affected by it.

My OH used the Champix tablets and I know loads of people who have used them and they've been great! My OH well didn't want to quit, the only reason he did was to help me and they've taken alot of the hard work out so he just needs a little bit of will power!xx

TBH, i was thinking about telling my mother if she wanted to hold the baby, she not only had to wash her hands, but change her shirt too... i remember when i was younger, she picked up my teddy bear, and it smelled like smoke forever more, and i was totally gutted about it. my mother wasn't keen on that idea at all, and i think she thinks i was joking.

Is 30 minutes enough time though? Did someone find that number on a website, because I've noticed quite a few people say no holding baby for 30 minutes after a cigarette. I didn't think that was enough time.

I made everyone use anti-bac gel when my babies were home from the hospital or at least wash their hands when they came to visit us. My parents smoke and I made them use it to hold my babies. You are the parent, your baby, your choice!!! :) Good Luck!!!

It's the suggested advice but I believe the carcinogens stay on the clothes and skin, hair etc. for hours. I wish I could avoid any smokers holding my new baby but it's just unrealistic so they will be asked to wait for half an hour and wash their hands with soap and water thoroughly. It will be limited though. If it offends, tough. God I hate smoking and the smell is disgusting.

I wouldn't personally do that as I think it's a bit unneccessary but I think it is completely your decision and that's the most important thing.

It doesn't smell nice and there may be some tiny risks as the media is saying now so you are justified in asking people to use the gel - and it's hardly a lot to ask!

But you may across a bit OTT - as long as you don't mind offending people then I say do what feels right for you.

I'm surprised no one has brought up the sids risk related to second hand smoke. There is no such thing as over the top with your baby..other peoples feelings be damned.
