Smoking during pregnancy?

my friend smoked through both her pregnancies, went overdue with both and both were and still are completely healthy.

God this makes me sound terrible but I smoked about between 4-10 a day before I had DD and i mean we are talking age 13-14! It just shows what you can get into when you hang witholder people who are not good. Looking at itnow I regret it so badly and wish I never did but in a way am glad because now I will never do it again. I stopped the minute I thought there was a chance I was pregnant and thank goodness because I was. I worried what the couple of weeks of smoking before I knew would have done but Lily is fine thank God but I would still go back and never have smoked just to be sure. No offence to your friend but at 20 weeks I refused to let OH back in the house until 5 minutes after he had a fag, how can she reason with her self to actually smoke whilst being a guardian of a life

Sorry to butt in here..BUT in no way whatsoever does going cold turkey harm your baby.
Once you quit your baby's oxygen levels will go up,where as if you continue your restricting the baby's oxygen levels.

I smoke myself but managed to stop during my pregnancy,And i have smoked since i was 13 and still managed to stop for my baby and went completely cold turkey.

It's only for 9 months i dont understand why people try and justify the fact that they can continue smoking and it'll be fine.

I understand its an addiction and a hard one to break ect ect and try not to judge people who try their hardest to cut down ect ect but by quitting completely it will NOT harm your baby...

The lungs:
When you smoke, or inhale other people's secondhand smoke, the smoke goes into your lungs.
Chemicals from the smoke, such as carbon monoxide, are then absorbed into your bloodstream.
Some of the oxygen in your blood is replaced by carbon monoxide.
This means that the oxygen supply to your baby may be restricted.

Heart:
When you smoke you inhale over 4,000 chemicals from the cigarette. One of these is a dangerous chemical called carbon monoxide, which gets into your bloodstream.
This restricts the oxygen that's essential for your baby's healthy growth and development, and because cigarettes restrict their oxygen supply, their tiny heart has to beat harder every time you smoke.

Stop smoking now and both you and your baby will get the benefits immediately. The carbon monoxide and other chemicals quickly leave your body. It means there's more oxygen in your blood, making you and your baby much healthier.

Thankyou for this information.
I will be phoning them up tomorrow for help and support.
I don't smoke cigarettes but I do smoke tobacco which is as bad.
:(

Thanks for all the replies guys, I like to get perspective on things by hearing what lots of people think about an issue. I'll ask my friend for a bit more info and see if I can be of support to her. :)

I smoked when preggo with Hollie, I worked on a building site untill 30 weeks preggo with a bunch of blokes and smoking was the only think that stoped me killing them all.
I know it was bad for my baby and I felt shit every time I did it, I'm not going to excuse what I did but quitting smoking IS hard though as soon as Hollie was born and she because my daughter that was now tangable I wanted to quit and I smoked one ciggy in the morning way before she woke up and outside and when she went to bed for a few hours at night I would go out of a few, Now though I am quit and have been for 3 months quitting was the hardest thing I have done, harder than being pregnant and giving birth, glad Im over it now though.

My mom smoked when she was pregnant with me, and pregnant with my little brother as well..
I've always been kind of upset with her for it. I will never start to smoke though. I hate it, and the smoke makes me sick.
And my boyfriend friends don't smoke in the house anymore because him and I are over a lot :) So it's nice that other people are taking precautions that I am pregnant as well.

I think smoking during pregnancy is absolutely unacceptable and selfish. Saying it will shock the baby if yoy quit too fast is a load of horseshit and really just a gentle way to ease your conscience while you puff another smoke.

I think its not worth the risk. Yes its an addiction but so what? Wouldnt you rather your LO be 100% healthy and lung problem free instead of being selfish so you dont feel like shit from giving up? I hate when people say ''Oh, but my mum did it with me, or my friend did it and her LO is fine'' Sorry, but yes plenty of people are fine and plenty are NOT, why risk it?

:dohh:

I know smoking is bad in pregnancy and in general. But some people cannot cope without it. I mean, wouldn't it be better to smoke then go off the rails? It's different for everyone. And each to their own. But i just think that in some cases it's probably safer for LO stresswise etc if they didn't give up.
I mean Marijuana is much worse, and i've had people trying to tell me it it less harmful for their LO's then Cigarettes.

I To with my 1st child used to smoke in early pregnancy but that was before i even found out i was actually pregnant, i stopped as soon as i found out, and even after i gave birth i didnt go back to smoking i dont know why i just went off it completely! i suppose it does take alot for some women, i have a friend who is about 20 weeks and shes still smoking.. i looked at her with my mouth open and i said your still smoking.. she told me it harder than you think and she used to smoke 30-40 a day now she smokes 10 a day i know its still alot but shes cutting down slowly and good on her :) i have alot of respect for women who try to quit :)

Straight marijuana has only natural chemicals, ciggarettes has much more harmful chemicals. I think you shouldnt do either, but ciggarettes are worse.

Well done to all the ladies who quit :D! I've never smoked, it's just never appealed to me but my OH did and he quit when we found out baby was on the way :flower:. He never smoked in the house anyway but even without smoking around me it's still an expensive habit and the money can now be spent on better things :). It really does annoy me when people say oh but such and such smoked through their pregnancy and baby is fine. It's like saying you ran into a busy road and were fine - not everyone will be so lucky! Doctors, nurses and midwifes wouldn't just advise you not to for the fun of it. I have heard though that you shouldn't go cold turkey if it severly stresses you out as the stress is worse for the baby - it was on misbehaving mums i'm sure. xxx

I definitely don't agree with smoking while pregnant. With that being said, I've never been a smoker but I saw my parents struggle to try and quit multiple times. And they've both been non-smokers now for 10 years! My mom smoked and drank throughout all four of her pregnancies and we were all fine. But it's very scary now what they're finding out about what can happen to babies whose mothers smoke throughout their pregnancy. Personally, not worth the risk to me at all. After all the research that's been done and proven, I can't imagine smoking while pregnant, I'd have an anxiety attack.

I had an older sister who smoked through out her whole pregnancy. It disgusted me. Thankfully, my niece is healthy, but I could NEVER do that to my baby.

I never really smoke often, but I'll admitt... I had a cigarette about 5 minutes after I found I was pregnant. Calmed my nerves a little, but since then.. I can't bring myself to have one.

I've never been a smoker but my OH does he knows not to come near me when smoking but I definitely understand how stressful it is to quit he knows he has to before our daughter gets here and he has cut down a lot since before I was pregnant. Both my parents are smokers and growing up I've seen them try to quit several times, it's hard work and congrats to those ladies who have completely quit and to those that cut down.

I personally don't believe the 'stress is making me smoke' thing, that's like saying while pregnant if I get overly stressed I can go out and party with some friends and get wasted. At some point you have to decide that both you and your child's health is more important, even if I cut down on the amount of alcohol their are scientific facts proving that drinking can cause harm to unborn babies. Why risk it?

Smoking during pregnancy is disgusting.
I was hooked on coke when I found out I was pregnant...(seriously hooked, as in upwards of £500 on it a week. I was able to fund it through my OH.)
If I was able to quit a class A drug for the sake of my baby, I don't think smokers have any excuse to continue.
Bleugjhh

Please tell me this is a joke right?

You can not cope without a cigarette??? IT's not gonna kill you..I'm a heavy smoker now and was before i fell pregnant and i coped i didnt go off the 'rails'!!!

Jeez i'm sorry but by cutting out smoking is not gonna harm you unborn child and people who thinks this must be ignorant as the facts state on the NHS website cutting out helps your babys blood supply :dohh:

:coffee: Completely agree here. Its just another excuse.

The thing is stopping smoking wont kill you...BUT COULD kill your baby...

Don't see you would take the risk and make excuses for it.

Okay I found out I'm pregnant just a few days ago, although I had started trying to quit the week before (was expecting to have quit completely by the time we conceived... not quite, it happened rather faster than we expected :)) I'm on one low dose patch a day and I haven't had a single ciggy since I found out. Not worth it and I smoked for seven years. x
