So ANGRY! 20 weeks NHS scan!!

That would of upset me also. I'm plus size and they usually just jab me really good with the probe and also they shook my belly to make LO move. My sonographer was having a hard time, but she definitely tried and got all her images she needed. Sounds like yours wasn't trying hard enough.

At my 12 week scan I was told she was having difficulty viewing because I have this odd pouch of fat on my tummy which restricted the view. She wasn't nasty about it, just straight and explained what the issje was and then said lets try different positions to look around this. So she said because of it she'd need me to roll onto my side so she could get baby into a position and get her thingy between the fat and my side where it got a clearer view. She also had to push very hard but she was apologetic about it and had explained why.

Tbh I expected it as on my notes from first pregnancy was 'restricted view due to fat on stomach' so I anticipated it for this pregnancy. I am overweight but I wouldn't say I'm huge. A size 14 but only 5 ft 2.

How rubbish was she! I had a bad experience at my 12 week scan I'm not a small person size 16/18 and the woman was very rude doing my scan because I was larger she couldn't get accurate measurements she was telling me to roll over on both sides and pressing so hard on my tummy and her comments were so sarcy and rude it made me feel awful she didn't even say bye when I left the room just told me to wait outside to book my next appt!
Can you not complain about how you felt and how you were treated it doesn't take much for someone to have a good 'bedside manner' there is no need for impolite and obnoxious people! Hope your next scan is better x

If it is to do with weight, then why can't they be polite and straight forward, so we at least know WHY they struggle to get a clear photo.

Women can't exactly lose weight while pregnant but they could at least forward ladies to speak to a specialist with nutrician whilst pregnant so that baby gets enough but so that ladies don't pile on the bad weight from eating bad things.

Like don't be rude, how about offer help and advice to make people healthier BMI's.

Rather than avoiding saying you're simply overweight and may need to see someone about getting to a healthier weight and size?

Like there's no need for people to avoid it, or not avoid it and be plain rude! Makes me mad!

I agree bright eyes. Again though I haven't had a problem at any other scan I've had. I just don't think she could be bothered, maybe if she pressed down with the probe rather than running it over my tummy she would of got something.

I'm more annoyed at the fact she didn't turn the screen round for me to. If she can't get the measurements girl what ever reason that's fine, I don't mind coming back! but at least show me my baby especially when I've asked you too. :(

Sorry you've had such a horrible experience.

I've had quite good ones with my 3 pregnancies. I had an absoloutely lovely woman at my 7 week one, she gave me a cheeky photo of my blob, and had a good dig around even though once we'd dated she didn't need to, she told me which ovary baby had come from etc.

I was lucky enough to have her at the 12 week scan too. After the scan when she was writing the notes I asked about nub theory and she told me she'd seen the nub and what she thought, and then she showed me a potty shot and said she thinks it'll be a boy. She printed us 3 photos (they're quite strict and you pay £5 for 1-2 but you pay before you go in to the actual sonographer) and since my last pregnancy they now have this huge flat screen on the wall so you and your partner can watch while she is doing it so she doesn't have to turn the monitor.

I'm sure I had one bad scan at one point with one of them where I left feeling totally disheartened but can't pin it down in my memory.

I hope the next one is better and I would seriously contact PALS.

Oh my gosh hun I am so so sorry you had to go through that! At our hospital there is a nice tech and a grumpy one! The one i had for my 12 week scan was kind of inbetween. Im a large lady (uk size 26/28) but not once did she complain about my size. She did apologize because she had to dig quite hard but no mention of me being "too fat".

I would put in a complaint though hun thats so not on how she tret you! xxx

Thy really do seem to be very hit and miss with the NHS. We have been very fortunate with almost all of our scans and the sonographers have been great. Some are more friendly/chatty than others but as a minimum they should all be polite and courteous, there is no need to be rude! I am slightly overweight and at my 20 week scan the sonographer had me moving into a few different positions to get the measurements she needed but she was kind enough not to even hint that this was due to my size. The only reason I knew was because it was mentioned in the scan notes afterwards but I didn't mind as it was true I guess.

The only others thing to maybe consider is the quality of the equipment they are using. I have also had quite a few private scans and part of the appeal to me is that they do tend to have the latest and best technology which means we always get great, clear pics etc I suspect due to budgeting, the NHS equipment may just be 'fit for purpose' in some places. Of course this is no excuse for how you have been treated and I do hope your next scan is a far more enjoyable experience.

X

This is so sad :( I'm a sonographer and I love my job! I always treat patients with respect and explain everything I'm looking at and why. It makes me annoyed that people do this job and are so heartless!
Im sorry you had this experience :( xx
