is the advice my bf hating mother gave OH :dohh:. spent afternoon with sis and sis-in-law at assault course for hen do and left oh with baby at my parents as it was near to the course so i wouldnt be away from them long. mother decides to tell oh to give thomas rusks as she gave them my bro at 4 wks. accordingly he argued with her and put her straight then she didnt speak to him for an hour and a half (bonus!). i felt bit guilty bout leaving them both at mothers for 4hrs, but im glad he stood his ground.

other useless advice shes given us:
 give him formula as im not producing enough milk (from the size of him and amount im leaking not a problem)
 its better when he has a bottle so we know how much hes having (hes content with his boobie and seems to be filling himself up)
 give him a dummy when he's crying (he refuses a dummy and only crys if hungry, has wind, needs changing)
 i shouldnt nurse him to sleep else he wont go down on his own (he goes down fine when not hungry)
 babies start crying at 6 in the evening and we should put him on our knee and rub his tummy (not encountered this yet)

im glad she lives 30miles away so we dont get her advice very often

 Good thing your DH was able to stand up for himself! If nothing else, at least your mothers advice gives you a bit of a laugh

I have this a lot with my MIL and sometimes my mum (who is normally brilliant with me and Poppy). My MIL was down at the weekend and always asks why i don't give her a nice bottle of water, or why aren't i giving her food? She kept putting her dinner in front of Poppy all weekend saying ' Oh look, she's looking at it! she really wants some of this chip / tomato / chicken...."!!!

I think it's just that every few years the health advice changes....and 20 / 30 years ago formula was very much in fashion, so lots of older parents now don't really understand how breastfeeding works so well.

My mum was telling me she used to give me carnation milk as a baby!!!! Now that is just full of sugar and cows milk!!

That was all great advice when back when she was having her babies. We do things differently now, we know better in some way of doing things. UGH!

:ignore:

To me there's an obvious contradiction with the 'dont nurse to sleep' and give a dummy' statements.......it's not ok for you to comfort him to sleep incase he gets dependant on it but it's ok to become dependant on a piece of plastic and silicone???
