my lo and i got discharged from the hospital yesterday around one or two pm before we left she fed really well and had a bowel movement. from the time we've gotten home til now she's fed but has had Alot of gas and no bowel movement. she's wet her diaper. when i got up this morning i washed her up a little changed her clothes and tried to feed. she was totally disinterested she rooted when the nipple was in her mouth. she'd suck frown and then she'd cry hystericly until i stopped and put the pacifier back in her mouth. i'm concerned because she hasn't Pooped since coming home. was i wrong for letting the nursing staff give her the pacifier when she was over stimulated. i feel like a horrible person now. i feet like she'd rather starve rather than take my milk

Firstly congratulations on your new bundle of joy :-D

I had a lot of problems getting my LO to feed properly, 3 days we were in hospital just trying to teach him how to get the hang of it. The nurses kept trying to give him top ups, which fair enough kept him full, but in the end I found waiting it out was the one that worked, when he was truely hungry he let me know!
As for the BMs, he didnt go until he was 24 hours old and then in the week following we had 1 every other day until he got the hang of feeding.

If you're really worried you could try expressing some milk and cup feeding? We used a steralised shot glass so as not to confuse with with a bottle teat and fed about an ounce of milk just to tide him over.

Although easier said than done, try not to worry too much, she'll soon let you know when shes hungry :)

As for the pacifier, again I wouldnt worry, sometimes they just want to sooth instead of eat.

Chin up my dear and bear with her xx

thank you so much for the encouragement i'm second guessing my decisions and starting to make myself feel bad

I guess i'm worryin because within her first twenty four hours she soiled several diapers and to go from that to nothing has me like o my goodness what did i do wrong!

Congratulations on your LO! Your doing really well, i've only been a mum for 2 weeks but in that time I've learnt that their eating/ sleeping/ pooing patterns are so irregular! They have no sense of routine and do everything exactly when they feel like it (or so it seems). Just keep offering the breast when she seems hungry and carry on waiting patiently for her to latch. She will when she wants to. Is there any support you can get like la Leche people?

Oh and about the pacifier, don't worry about it! I've given my baby one, he's fine with it and knows the difference between that and the breast.

I still felt uneasy so i made a call to the newborn clinic and they weighed her and discovered that he'd fell below the ten percent mark in weight so i'm going to offer the breast first and supplement as well until my milk comes in. when she was born she weighed six pounds six ounces but today her weight was at five pounds eight ounces. i have a follow up appointment tomorrow to see how she does tonight. I have to admit i felt like a failure but i realized it.'s for my little girl! and it.'s not like i've given Up i'm just using this until my milk comes in :hugs: i feel so much better now. my appetite has even picked up!

I'm glad you're feeling better about it, remember you're never a failure, you're just new at this, everybodys got to learn sometime and no amount of reading those "informative" books will ever truely prepare you :)
I gave up trying to work out my LOs pooping routine! Even now it seems to change weekly.

Make the most of your apetite whilst breastfeeding, its the only time you can really indulge in your favourites and not have to justify it to the scales! :)

Hope all goes well at your appointment, keep us posted :hugs:

On a side note, congratulations Lau86 on your new little bundle as well :)

it seems to be working! i feed on both breast and offer a half ounce to ounce of milk. she also taught me to use a medicine bulb with the formula to make her interested towards the breast. i fill the medicine bulb with formula and place a little on my nipple's and she latches and feeds well! i'm excited to go to my appointment tomorrow! i'm just waiting on my milk to come in. how long does it take anyway?

Oh good news :)
Mine came in after about a week.
Woke up one morning with very large full and rather hard boobs wondering what on earth had happened! Had to express some just to relieve the pressure as LOs appetite wasn't that big yet :)

Ditch the pacifier.

It will

a) Cause nipple confusion as it is a different sucking reflex which is needed

b) You will miss the hunger cues as she is sucking on a pacifer.

All babies are different, these are possible outcomes, not definates.

:) I never had any problems with a pacifier, neither did any of the women in my parent group

Pacifiers have been shown to help reduce risk of SIDS

Also if LO wants to suck its much easier to wean off a pacifier than it is to stop a thumb sucker :)
