I read on a website that the average 18 month old says 70 words! That sounds like an awful lot to me. My DS is 18 months and says about 40 words and a few two word phrases. Does that sound about right? My DD was a very advanced talker so I am trying not to compare them!

That is a lot. Jess said about 30 by the time she was 2, and now talks fluently. Think I remember my friend saying her HV said a 2 year old should say 150 words! I was a bit concerned about her back then as she was quite slow with talking but came on leaps and bounds after her 2nd birthday. Don't worry, your LO sounds fine to me and every child is very different :flower:

That's a lot of words!

i think Tom had about 15 maximum by 18 months and then 30 by 22 months when his language took off. He was still talking in 4 word sentences with 100+ words by the time he was 2.

Neither of mine had any words at 18 months! Both had the requisit 50 by two an now you can't shut them up!

When my DS was 2 the book that i'd been given when he was around 12 months old from the hospital/drs said that on average a 2 year old is expected to have 50 words, as in use 50 words in the right context. My DS at that time had way in excess of 150 words.

I would say that 70 at 18months is way more than the official guidelines.

I have just done a google search and one website i found said that at 18 months they should say 50-100. The trouble is that there is nothing on this website that substantiates that claim. I think a lot of websites can be like this. The only place that i will trust in respect of things like this is my doctors surgery and my health visitor.

DD says a lot more than that, she copies any word and can talk in sentances and hold little convos!

DS didn't say 5 words at 18 months

Both are normal though, just different ends of scale x

I know there are always exceptions but most boys I know of the same age talk later than the girls too xxx

Daisy has always been an advanced talker so was talking in sentences at 18 months but I remember the HV saying 50 words was what was expected by the age of 2 so 40 words at 18 months is more than average for that age.

I agree with the others - they look for 50 words by 2, so 40 words by 18mo sounds like he's doing excellent.
By the time he's 2 he'll probably have doubled or tripled that amount!

Megan was advanced talker too and I didn't pay much attention to what they said was expected as she was above that.

But I do remember they said for 15 months they wanted 3 words. They could include mama, dada, hi, bye, animal sounds, etc. So going from 3 -70 in 3 months seems like quite a bit jump?!

The girl pediatrician said don't expect Jordan to talk like Megan did as megans speech isn't the norm. So I will have the same issue of not having a clue what to really expect from jordan.

Isabella has around 100 words and speaks in 2-3 word sentences. This is definitely way mote than would be expected for not quite 18 months! 40 words sounds more than average to me.

Id say paige had around 200 words and copied everything. It wasnt until she was closer to 19 months that she started saying little sentences. I think 40 words sounds totally fine, and definitely nothing ro worry about!

My son is nearly 18months and probably only says 10-15 words and most of them only i can make out, i'm not worried in the slightest. He does talk but its baby talk and none of it really makes sense, but he does have a go at copying even if everything pretty much sounds the same!

I heard 5 words us average for a 1 year old. My almost 18 month old can say hiya and that is it

Frankie is almost 18 months and says about 30 words and a couple of two word sentences and 1 3 word sentence x

My DS is 19 months and only says mama, dada, nana. He will copy sounds, raspberries, kisses, squeals etc but he doesnt say words in context apart from mama mostly.

40 words sounds like loads to me!

Tommy is 1 soon and can't say anything yet just bababa, mamama, dadada sounds, not with any meaning though.

Joel says nothing apart from mama, dada and no, your LO sounds pretty ahead I'd say !

My LO can say maybe 10-15 words and mostly only we as her parents understand. She understand what you are saying to her more than she can can communicate back. I think 40 words for an 18 month old is hell of a lot!

I agree 40 words is loads. My LO can say maybe 10-15 words.
