Hi
Would you say it's safe to pop into starbucks once or twice a week for an espresso in the second trimester?

I avoided any caffeine the first 9 weeks, then started drinking a cup or two of hot chocolate at home. Since last week (at 14 weeks), I've given into temptation and had an 8oz mocha twice. It has only 95mg caffeine, less than the upper limit of 200mg, but I still worry.

With my first pregnancy, I didn't touch espresso all 9 months. My m/s is much worse this time around and it just perks me up momentarily. I have a sick, disgusting taste in my mouth all the time and it helps relieve that a bit.

But I drink it with a ton of guilt. Do you think it's ok? Anyone drinking starbucks in the second tri?

Thanks...

I drink coffee everyday and I did with my first pregnancy. I try to just drink a cup a day sometimes two. I don't think it will do anything and my midwife this time said it's fine to drink caffeine when I told her I was getting headaches. I say go for it!

I haven't had any caffiene in this pregnancy but that's more because I can't actually have it as it causes migraines for me!
I think if I could have it, I'd be happy to have a coffee a day. Docs just advise not too much.

I know that sometimes they will prescribe caffeine to pregnant women who are suffering from headaches. I still drink iced tea every day, and the occasional frapp (it's hot outside!). My mom drank, like, 5 cups every day when she was pregnant with me. I honestly think this is one of those where it's everything in moderation, obviously. Don't be ordering Trente's with double shots or anything!

I say go for it! I drink one or two cups a day still and just had my 20 week scan and baby is perfectly healthy!

I drink 3 cups of tea a day, with the odd (haha) chocolate bar, so i'd say go for it. The guidelines say 200mg rather than none, so I don't personally see a problem.

I've been told my nutritionist & doctor two cups a day is okay! I've always only had one : )

I still drink my cup of coffee daily, there's nothing wrong with that. Just don't drink 10 cups in one day. Bubs hardly even gets more active, not much, if any, crosses the placenta. Studies are geared towards people who continue to go over board. xx

I have my morning cup of coffee every day and my doctor said my baby looked perfectly healthy at my 20 week scan, so an occasional trip to Starbucks seems okay!

As everyone else has said... one a day should be fine! And you've said you only have it twice a week. I wouldn't worry at all. :) With my first, and even this one, I still drink about 2 cups of coffee a day.

I have 2-3 cups of caffeine a day and have done throughout. 1st pregnancy I had ms so didn't drink any during 1st tri, but drank it from when I stopped feeling sick until the end and didnt have a small baby.

I tend to drink more 'instant' coffee rather than coffee shop coffee though as they have much lower levels of caffeine. A tall Starbucks Americano has roughly 150mg of caffeine. Not a problem if you have one a day, but if like me you prefer to have a few cups a day plus a chocolate bar, then a shop bought coffee takes up most of your allowance.
