So I am hoping to do a BA in English starting in September but my partner got made redundant and we are currently receiving full housing benefit, I was just wondering if anyone knows whether student loans affect your housing benefit entitlement?

thanks in advance

They might affect the amount depending on how much you get, but they don't affect entitlement. I'm entitled to housing benefit, I'm a university student as is my partner. x

How on earth did you wangle that one? My hub and I were both full time students 2009-2010 and we weren't entitled to anything apart from council tax. My husband now works full time and I completed my Pgce this year but they wouldn't give anything to us because they consider loans and grants as income - apparently the government give students that money for living costs xxxx rubbish!

I got advised I was entitled, as our income is actually considered lower due to having a baby as certain grants arent considered income. I.E. Parents Learning Allowance / Special Support Grant. So my income is considered to be 5k (Maintenance loan, even if I dont take it out). I'm a full time undergraduate student, if that helps? x

I'm entitled to CTC, Child Benefit, Housing benefit .. And in the summer will be apparently entitled to either JSA or Income support? But I've not claimed that. If it helps, Student finance consider me a lone parent as me and my partner are under 25 and married. x

Ah sorry my bad!!! Completely forgot I was on a mummy forum ha! We didn't have children, so that be why... Duh me! :) xxx

Haha! Oh right. Yeah students without children can't claim anything :p x

If there is a sudden change to you income there is a form you can get so they base your income on this/next year rather than on your previous income.

Your hb will depend on the amount of your student loan. Make sure your partner enters his details when applying for your loan. If he has already done it he needs to update his income details.

Sorry, I'm making it sound complicated. Just check directgov and your online student loan ac. It's pretty straighforward once you get started.

My friend gets housing benefit althoug she doesn't have kids. She gets DLA (disability) so I think that's the other exception to the no benefit to students rule.
