Hi, just wondering if these are okay? I had cold chicken salad with southwest sauce. I didn't go for mayo but then realised its probably the same sort of thing anyway! What are your views? Safe to eat? They taste so good!

I've had subway, but I always have my subs toasted.

Most shop bought or chain food vendor places will use mayo that has been made with pasteurised eggs, so it's quite safe. I could kill for a Subway, I really could. Toasted Italian BMT with salad and sweet onion dressing on the herb and cheese bread. Footlong. *sniff*

Mmmmm yes they are good! I am in love with the southwest sauce. Thanks x

Ive been munching Subway too!

Footlong Italian BMT on Herb and Cheese bread, toasted with cheese and lettice and ranch dressing...soooooo good. Why did I visit this thread? I want that like now...I must have it... *rings OH at work..*

But yes, as its been stated before, they are a big chain and the big chains tend to use pasturised eggs and things dont they.

No! It's deli meat which may contain listeria. You can go and have meatballs or a salad, but not sandwiches. You need the meat to be cooked to kill any listeria.

I eat at subway all the time. I love it!! And the pickles!! I usualyy just get an assorted sub not toasted

I'm curious about the whole Deli meat thing. (being a vegetarian) What actually counts as Deli meat? I assume that ham from a shop is okay because it has quite a long shelf life, they must be doing something to the meat to control that. But big pieces from an actual delicatessen may have been sitting out in there for a while, being chopped when people ask for it, will have had much chance to be infected by listeria bacteria? Is that right? O_o

I love Subway sandwiches. :) They only make two veggie ones though, so I think I should be safe.

OMG!! Only thing I can eat lunch time. Love me ALOT of pickles and no deli meat/cold cuts just tuna or chicken withhoney mustard.

If you're in the UK, the NHS don't advise against eating deli meats because the risk of listeria here is minimal to zero.

I love Subway! Italian BMT with cucumber, LOADS of pickles and southwest sauce mmm. I've just ate a whole pizza, but I'm hungry now. :haha: xx

I was gonna say, my midwife never mentioned deli meats at all when she reeled off the list of things I can and cannot eat :S

Am worried now, will have to find out for sure as ive eaten a lot of Italian BMTS lol

Inorder to kill the listeria you need to heat the meat back up to over 160 degrees F I believe, then it's considered safe. It is quite rare for listeria outbreaks but always better to be safe. So heat ur meat to kill bacteria. I've REALLY wanted subway/ quizno's with pickled peppers..... OMG! Yum!
And mayo that is store bought or used in fast food chains would be fine, stay away from the homemade/ restaurant made mayos.

Here's the link to the NHS section about what not to eat:

https://www.nhs.uk/chq/Pages/917.aspx?CategoryID=54&SubCategoryID=130

And their quote:

"Some countries advise pregnant women not to eat cold meats or smoked fish because of the risk that the food may contain listeria bacteria. In the UK, pregnant women are not advised to avoid these foods because the risk of infection is so low. However, if you’re concerned, you may choose to avoid them."

Even so, if you have the sub toasted then the heat would get rid of the bacteria anyway. If there was a substantial risk, then the NHS would warn against eating deli meats. :) xx

Ahh thanks a lot for finding that Sarah (Hope you dont mind me calling you that, SP92 seemed a little too impersonal for thanking someone haha)

Well, I think I am going to continue to eat them, as you have said the toasting process would surely kill any bacteria and if it was a really massive issue, the NHS would be warning us away from it surely.

I miss having my lettuce, mayo and turkey sandwiches!

I stay away from uncooked deli meat and mayo, would rather be safe than sorry. They have steak and chicken that is re-warmed so would be safer. Especially with all the stuff happening in the last few years with Maple Leaf, only figuring out the problem when everyone's eaten it already...grrrrrrrrr I would rather not eat it in the first place!

I'm planning to buy some deli meats and reheat them for lunches, once they have been cooked the bacteria dies. Whether it be listeria, samonella or E coli!
I LOVE sandwiches!
