My almost 8 week old was up to having 120-140ml every four hours. But she's suddenly dropped down to 40-50ml every 3 hours and I don't know why. She has had problems with constipation for weeks, not sure if that has anything to do with it.

She has been checked by doctor for oral thrush etc, but can't find anything wrong. I make sure she is winded properly and try to make her as comfortable as possible but still can't understand why her amounts have dropped and cannot stop worrying.

She may be feeling a bit overloaded with the constipation or could she possibly be coming down with anything? Leave it a little longer to see if she goes back to normal. If not, a change in milk really helped my dd.

I've switched her to Hipp Organic as Cow and Gate Comfort wasn't helping her. She started dropping her amounts while she was still on the comfort though, so the change isn't the reason she's taking less. She's also gone 9-10 hours without a feed for two nights, despite me trying to get her to eat. She usually has 2-3 feeds a night. She's gone from 9pm last night to now 8am, and she only had 40 ml at 9pm. Surely she's starving.. But all she seems to want to do is sleep. Took her to the doc and they said she's fine.

But this doesn't seem right.

Just to mention, she is also a very windy baby. She has a really hard time bringing up burps and I have to try for ages with her. Although she seems to be burping better since I changed her milk to Hipp. We can't use anti colic bottles as she has a cleft palate and so we have to use special tall squeezy bottles. We have tried infacol, colief and gripe water, all did nothing for her. We are currently trying dentinox drops. She is also constantly farting and seems in pain. She's had constipation for weeks but doc won't give her anything. I've tried bicycling her legs and massage but it doesn't seem to help her much.

Thinking lack of milk is wind/constipation related?

Sounds like it may be wind and constipation fullness. But keep an eye on her, if she seems really lethargic don't wait till your GP is open. Take her straight to a&e and a paediatrician will check her over. May seem extreme but it's advice nurses have given me twice now with ds. Though obviously if she is happy enough then don't worry for now, just keep a watch.

Although if I were you I'd be tempted to try a&e anyway as they may help with the constipation issue and if she's not generally a sttn baby its obviously concerning. It will set your mind at rest hopefully and I'm assured they don't mind it with babies this young.

Last time we went to hospital with her they messed us about for ages and we didn't get home til 1am and because of the hospital lights and noise, she didn't sleep all day and was overtired and screaming the place down.

She isn't overly lethargic so I will just keep an eye on her. If she still hasn't picked up her amounts by the end of the day I will make the doctor check her again tomorrow. Surely there is SOMETHING they can give her to help her constipation as I think that's a huge issue. She goes every few days, which I know can be normal, but it's super hard then when she's eventually passed the hard bit, a ton of soft/runny poo explodes out of her. Poor kid. It's like it's all building up.

The only thing thats stopped her screaming right now is lying on my chest with a pacifier in her mouth.

Did they give you any advice on the constipation issue? Like a bit of juice in some water? If you've tried that and it's not helping there are things like lactulose they can give. They really shouldn't be fobbing you off though. Youre going to have to go in and go mental and refuse to leave until they do something!

Health visitor said to try some cool boiled water, water with apple/orange juice in. But whenever I try to give it to her she just screams and spits it out. I've tried giving it to her in a bottle, from a spoon, from a syringe. I've even tried tricking her by switching her bottle during a feed from her milk to the water but she won't have any of it!!

Doctor won't give me lactulose, keeps saying she's too young :/

She is now crying during each feed and spitting up a lot :(

Are you using a full dose of dentinox? When we give ds the full dose he goes mad like it really hurts him to burp and fart. Half a dose works really well though.

Sorry your lo is in a bad way. You're gonna have to bully a dr I think. Has reflux been mentioned?

I have been giving a full dose. I will try using half. Doc dismisses reflux as she doesn't vomit.

It's possible to have reflux without vomitting. Stupid dr. Ds has been diagnosed with acid reflux, he doesn't do much in they way of vomitting but does sick up a lot but more worryingly wretches and screams in pain with it. I'm not sure if thats the same as silent reflux but that also doesn't necessarily include vomitting. Reflux is also possible with weight gain too. You may need a more sympathetic doctor or to see a paediatrician.

Our health visitor did the "he's gaining weight so there can't be anything wrong line". Two gps diagnosed him straight away (emergency dr and our GP). But there are people on here who have terrible experiences with getting their babies seen to.

I hope you get a GP who'll help soon.
