sudocrem after every nappy change??

I've not used anything and so far *touch wood* she's been fine! I don't like the idea of sudocrem (sp), if anything I'd rather use bepathen (sp) or even vaseline.

My mom said me and my brother never got any sort of nappy rash & she swears its because she put a cream on us everytime so it's just something i'm considering doing but i do agree that sudocrem is very heavy.

we just use boots zinc & castor oil cream then if her bum did get a little sore i then used sudocrem or metanium x

Sudacrem is brilliant with sore skin bits, but I dont use it on babas skin unless he is sore. Avent do a nappy rash cream and a miracle cream and it is fantastic for any funny little rashes. My little man is a sensitive little soul and already on prescription skin cream from the docs so we have to be careful. I find sudacream can be very 'cloggy'

I used to in the beginning . Now she only gets cream on the one before bed (as she wears that nappy for 12 hours) or when her skin is a bit irritated . No rashes yet (just thrush ).

I do use Sudocreme but also Kamillosan which is much lighter.

I dont use any nappy cream either, I think for the bottom petroleum type creams are more friendlier on non sore skin as a barrier. Sudocrem and metanium has harsher chemicals in it designed to heal already sore skin.

I worked with babies for 8 years and I found that the babies who used cream similar to vaseline got nappy rash a lot less or not at all, I have known of cases where babies with too much sudocrem on their bottoms have became sore because of overdosage. With metanium and sudocrem it should be put onto the skin very thinly not caked on.

Benpanthen is a cream I found that seemed good on the babies too, even with large amount used it didn't appear to give a bad effect with the babies I worked with, but all the same best to put it on thinly anyway as a precaution.

Also recently I saw my doctor about my sons ringworm on his tummy, he had a rash on his nappy area too, which turned out not to be related, she said it is just slight nappy rash, she asked me if I put cream on my babys bottom, I told her no, she said thats not a problem its good to let the babys skin do its job. Sometimes creams take away babys natural ability to self heal.

I am so surprised at all these responses! I can't believe I am in the minority, in that I don't put a thing on Archie's bum, except good old fashioned water and water based wipes... He has never, ever had nappy rash or any rash on his bum... Even during teething (so far).

I believe the creams are for treatment rather than prevention... I think the skin needs to breath and I, personally, hate my own skin being covered in creams/oils/jellies and think having to wear a nappy all day and night is bad enough!

Oh, and Archie gets at least half an hour of 'free willy' time morning and evening to let his bum have air... Which I believe helps too!

I have only ever put a teeny but if she looks a bit pink, had the same teeny pot since she was born and almost 10 months and only a quarter of it gone and she has never had nappy rash, but i dont use baby wipes unless we are out, just warm water and cotton

We've used Sudocrem as a barrier on advice of our GP and it's never given us any problems, but when I took Eleanor to nursery for her first week last week the staff said that they can only use Sudocrem on babies if the Sudocrem is signed in for use by the parent every day and that it's better to send them with Bepathen, which can be used as and when. If your baby is having no problems with any rashes or anything you don't really have to use anything. We only used the Sudocrem after Eleanor got the start of a yeast infection on her 'girlie bits' and the doctor suggested using the Sudocrem after each change. That said, when I'm out I don't bother putting it on if it's just for the odd change - it's just more to faff about with!

Lyss is obviously older- but she's still currently in nappies. We only use cream if she is sore (which has only ever been while teething) with most of her teeth the nappy rash cleared up using weleda cream (which smeels of oranges and is amazing! But her molars needed metanium!
I only really use sudocrem on her dribble rash. I don't like it, it's very heavy and sticky x

I use a smear of bepanthan at nappy change and she's never had a rash. I always use bepanthan on my tattoos and found it worked a treat for me. It's lanolin based so fairly gentle, but not as sticky as pure lanolin. I always just assumed you put cream on baby's bum as my mum always did with me. I've been questioning it though and might see how we go without it for a while. I give her nappy free time often which helps!

I have stopped using Sudocrem with every change a few times, thinking it might not be necessary. But every time both of my boys had a red sore bum soon after. Last time Dom did get the rash with it too. But I did find of course that if I didn't dry their bottoms very carefully after cleaning and before putting the cream on, the cream made it much worse. Poor babies, must be so uncomfy having a sore bottie and peeing/pooing on it.

I applied a cream after every nappy change when my LO was young. Not always sudocreme though. Never had any nappy rash whatsoever with my LO so not sure whether its down to the preventative measures or whether my LO has tough skin!

I put nappy cream on after every nappy change. Have done since she was about 2 weeks old. Her bum has never been red or had nappy rash so it works for us

I use sudocrem at every nappy change. I use the slightest amount - not much more than a few grains of rice just to put a light covering over her bum and bits to create a water proof barrier.

In my last ward i worked in the tissue viability nurse told us not to use sudocrem on any of the patients (a lot of bedbound elderly people with dementia and double incontinence) for various reasons - bacteria specific to sudocrem can breed, it affects the absorbancy of the nappy and can acutally cause nappy rash......so i never used anything lol, wasnt sure what else to use! But my wee ones never had nappy rash at all so....i've never really had to research nappy creams...

The hv told me to only use bum cream when he's sore, not at every nappy change.

I've always used it at every nappy change, and LO has never had nappy rash. Molly had it twice and vanished quickly.
