Hi, looking for some advice as I can't decide what to dooooo!

I was having trouble conceiving bofre I got preg and had some tests which showed up that I may have polycystic ovaries. The ultrasound showed 1 cyst on 1 ovary and possible multiple cysts on the other but I wasn't diagnosed with definite PCOS.

My midwife says the normal practice in my area is to suggest gestational diabetes tests (glucose tolerance test) for anyone with pcos (to be done at 28 weeks). I'm planning a home birth and am quite anti-too-much-intervention and I'm worried that if I have the tests and they highlight a possible prob it'll take away the possibility of having a straightforward birth (I'd prob have to have a monitored hospital birth). Obviously, the safety of the baby is the most important thing but I know from reading a bit that the tests are quite vague and often highlight a possible prob where there isn't one - plus it's not even a definite diagnosis in the first place. My sister also has suspected pcos and wasn't offered the GTT.

Not sure what to do... anyone in a similar situation, or if you're not, what would you do?

Thanks! :flower:

i have PCOS and im getting the GTT but that was more to do with my weight than the pcos, in fact they never mentioned it an an isue!?!?!

i would more likely get it done if i were you mainly because if you are having a home birth and it could cause a complication then at least you'll be prepared for it either way

:)

I really dont know if PCOS means you are more likely to get gestational diabetes, I know it can lead to type 2 diabetes in the future though.

I think if you didn't have the test and you had gestational diabetes, then one of the main problems you could have is that your baby would be large and it could cause problems with delivery. So if you are planning a home birth I would say have the test just to be on the safe side, if it turns out you have it then you can take the necessary steps to ensure your baby is healthy.

I have pcos, but also I have diabetes in the family and I have my test booked for when I'm 28 weeks...I didn't think twice about it, I feel its important for me to have it.

hi megs hun. i have PCOS and i havent been offered it or even told about it to be honest.
i would look more into it though. Hope you get the answers you need.

I have PCOS, and wanted a test but at my hospital were not concerned and said they do not consider it as a risk factor... grrr flipping NHS!. but i did want the test as my Nan had type II diabetes but they would'nt offer it to me.. Hoping to get it in NZ instead when/if i get to move there in 5 weeks time. I think it's better to have it than not and it's not harmful any way.

Thanks everyone - the NHS is so different in depending on area isn't it? I may well end up having it but it's typical that I didn't really want it and am being told to have it and that you DO want it Carrie and are told you can't have it!

i know i give up on the NHS as all hospitals seem to have policies for different things, mine are completely lapse about GTT but obsessed with Low Lying Placentas and have higher guidelines than another hospital down the road. I really wish i could go private now.
