My LO is BF and I need to stop for medical reasons plus the fact she wakes every 1-3 hrs for a feed and im so exhausted i cant carry on like this anymore after nearly 11 months of it

Ive heard you can sweeten formula with vanilla essence or milkshake powder

Shes on a special formula as shes allergic to cows milk and its v bitter

How much of the vanilla etc do i put in for a 6oz bottle?

xxxx

I've never heard of doing this so sorry, I don't have an answer for you.

its ok hun just im desperate to get her sleeping and i know it might not work but even if she just wakes 3 times a night itd be better than atm :(

What milk is baby on, my son had milk issues and was on wysoy sma i think he liked thye taste

i forgot the name its in one of my past threads nutragemin lempil or something!!!

yeah, that one is gross. Can you switch to another? That one is supposed to be for newborns...too hard to switch (I found out with Kelana...allergic to milk). The soys are yummy. Otherwise, maybe corn syrup? I would ask a professional before you do. Don't use unpasturized honey though.

it said 6 months plus on the bottle :S im not sure w got it on prescription so not sure if we can change

Oh see, my sister (a nurse) told me that they always give the babies who are breastfed soy, because the other ones aren't sweet enough, as breastmilk is very sweet. I bought the Nutramagien or whatever it's called, and Kelana cried when I gave it to her. I kept trying it on her, and then someone suggested the idea it might taste bad. I took a sip and it tasted like rotten mushrooms. It was gross!!! No woder she didn't want it. My sister then told me about the soy etc. It was a big waste of money as that formula is expensive. But, she does like the soy. Of course, she prefers me. I feed her at the table with it, so she thinks it is just part of mealtime.

oh right i didnt think of soy is it sweeter? im just so desperate for sleep im proud to BF but 10 months of waking every 2 hours has made me ill :( xxx

SMA wysoy smells a bit odd but my son loved it he was having it untill he was 3, because he had alergys - maybe worth a try ?? sorry cant be more help x

hope you feel better soon

Soy isn't really recommended in the UK because of all the hormones and stuff in it plus about a third of babies allergic to cow's milk who are changed to soya milk also become allergic to soya products.

I wouldn't use milkshake powder - too much sugar I'd think.

But when Macy was on Neocate I used brown sugar or golden syrup. You can add a teeny bit of rice too as it seems to help the taste. Just sweeten it to taste and gradually wean off it. I've heard of using Vanilla too (Farie is the lady to PM about this) but I couldn't find any alcohol free.

xx

i cant either was thnking of a health food shop. so u think maybe soya with corn syrup or similar. how much are we talking for a 6oz bottle as shell be on 6oz 3 times a day as opposed to 2x8oz as shes BF and feeds 3 times a day
1tsp of sweetener vanilla or syrup?
xxx

As the other lady said soya isn't recommended till 1 year due to hormone problems it can cause god won't prescribe it after one you can give alpro soya toddler which is 1 70 a carton
If she's allergic to cows mill good chance she will be to soya but there's rice milk and oat milk which she can have on verso ect and there quite sweet they also have added calcium x

Soya is widely used in canada as the formula industry isn't strongly regulated; in the UK even the soya formula manufacturers don't really advise using their products unless its a last resort, because the soya formula does have certain nutritional disadvantages and possibly may cause future health problems as mentioned above. The reason soy formula is so sweet is because a high percentage of it is glucose syrup, hypoallergenic formulas do not have such high levels. Also depending on which research you read 50-80% of babies allergic to cows milk protein will go on to be allergic to soya; if they don't already have an underlying allergy to it. Once you end up with a soya allergy or intolerance; you're in big trouble, because soya ingredients are in virtually everything in the UK; from bread, to virtually all baked goods including 'free from' ones, chocolate, even many meat burgers etc have it in. The Dr Oetker vanilla extract (not essence/flavouring) contains no alcohol, I'd use about half a teaspoon at first and then gradually put less and less so it is nothing.

Rice milk is not recommended for under 2s as it contains virtually no fat or protein; so is more like skimmed milk. Also recently the UK government has advised not giving rice milk to young children at all because of arsenic levels in the rice crops (something which is naturally occuring whether they are organic or not)/

We was told rice milk was fine as a last resort by the pead at the hospital lluckily lo is on soya milk now as he's over one

Have you seen a dietitacn?

i think il try sweetening this special formula that we got prescribed and if it doesnt work talk to the hv again xxx

If the food standards agency say rice milk should not ordinarily be given; then I'd rather err on the side of caution, obviously your paediatrician has weighed up the pros and cons in your case. I know from experience about the soya allergy because two of my boys have a soya intolerance, as have I. My second youngest only developed an intolerance to soya as far as we know; a few months ago when he was 3 and a half, after having it as his sole substitute for dairy products which he is allergic to. We're now using coconut based 'milk', its one of the least allergenic foods possible, and it has high levels of calcium and medium chain fatty acids, the one we use is called Kara. xx

Sorry to thread hi-jack, I was just reading about the soy formula stuff, how it's not as regulated in Canada etc and I'd never heard of it before so I've got a question!

What effects does the soy formula have on a baby?

My friends LO has been on it since she was 3 months old. She had a cows milk allergy so when my friend stopped BFing this is what her doctor told her to use. She will be one next month and she's always had really poor growth that the doctor has been keeping an eye on. At 11 months old, Jarrett is taller then her & weighs about a pound more then her --I know all babies are different shapes and sizes etc, but she is nearly one and hasn't doubled her birth weight yet. And its a quite significant difference for a baby (Jarrett) who is 6 months younger and on the 50th centile to be bigger then her. (She is meeting her milestones though. Shes usually a little late but shes learning at a steady pace, quite clever little girl really). Your posts about the soya though have got me wondering if that could have anything to do with her being so small??

Hmmm if soy formula isn't good, what about tofu? I feed Clara tofu a few times a week (she loves it). Not very much, but still...
