has anybody done this? how did your LO react?
My LO is 6 months now - at 9 weeks she was diagnoised with a possible cows milk allergy due to not having bowel movements for 6 days at a time - also would scream (think this was belly ache and her reflux that hadnt been diagnoised at this point). she didnt show any common allergy signs was just constipated - once on nutramigin her bowel movements went back to normal once or twice a day.
I have been weanin her since 19 weeks and at 21 weeks was advised by a dietician to introduce dairy into her food to see how she copes and if alls well after a month or 2 to then introduce normal formula - well she was absolutly fine with dairy in food ie yougs, cheese sauce, porridge with milk in it. i have now put her onto SMA (dietician rec this one) and she has been on it solely without any nutramigen for a week now and she is getting constipated - she is still goin a few times a day but its a very small amount and her bowel movements are formed and quite sticky.
do you think she just cant tollerate the cows milk formula to drink? should i try a diff brand of formula?
ETA - dietician n gp recommended we wean bk onto normal formula as they are not convinced she has a CMPI.

any advice will be gratefully recieved

We haven't started to wean Holly off Nutramigen yet, we were advised to wait til she's one. She's on the AA type though, as she wouldn't tolerate pepti milk (not sure if your LO is on lipil 1 or AA).

I'd say if your LO has been fine with dairy then she's probably fine. SMA is well known for causing constipation in babies, so maybe it's just a change of formula that's needed. However, keep her on SMA for at least a month - it can take that long for them to settle on a formula. When Holly was first switched to Nutramigen AA she was really constipated and it took around a month for it to settle down.

Having said that, I think some babies are just prone to constipation. Maybe try giving her some dried fruit like prunes or apricots, and see if it helps. I also find sweet potato quite good for constipation.

It doesn't sound like CMPI, my LO had the same with the constipation but she also had severe reflux so we were switched to Neocate (similar to Nutramigen) to make it easier on her digestive system. We switched back at 5-6months.

Aptamil or Cow and Gate Comfort might suit your LO better, they have less lactose and something in them to prevent constipation. Made my LO worse though.

Use Stage 1 milk as Stage 2/3 has extra iron and can cause constipation

We ended up with SMA and lactulose 2 times a day (4ml each time). Now she is on a mainly solid diet and hardly any milk we don't need the lactulose at all xx

thanks ladies
Have put Sophie onto hipp organic formula to see if that helps as it has more fibre in it (0.5g per 100ml sma had none) and less lactose than sma. fingers crossed this will work.
