Hey ladies. I am not pregnant yet, but I am starting my second IVF process this month. When I get pregnant again, I plan on breastfeeding this time around. I didnt breastfeed my son (I was 18 and didnt understand the benefits) and he was always sick.

My question is....I take antidepressants for bipolar depression. I take Effexor XR and Buspar. Do any of you take medications but still are able to breastfeed. I read conflicting things about it online...The most recent one stated (April 2014) that a research study has shown that the benefits of breastfeeding outweigh the risks of the medicine passing through the breastmilk and affecting the baby.

Any advice would be appreciated.

***Also note that stopping my medication is NOT an option. I did it before and ended up hospitalized***

It's best toask your doctor. I'm taking a low dose of zoloft, it's thought to be the safest of the SSRIs for breastfeeding because not much passes into the milk. I don't know about your meds, but it'd be a good idea to discuss with your doctor.
