ok So when I was trying to get pregnant, I was put on metformin but my gynae...He told me I would need to stay on it my entire pregnancy (I have PCOS) Anyway I went into see my family doctor today and she told me to immediately come off of it that it was not safe to take during pregnancy and doesn't understand why Gynae told me to stay on it. I cant get ahold of my gyn for another couple days so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I have read a lot of studies about this and I've never seen one that says Metformin is dangerous in pregnancy! Most studies say it is beneficial for women with PCOS to help ward off miscarriage in the first trimester and to help ward off GD.

I'm taking metformin and have been all the way through so far and baby is still kicking and has a heartbeat. I don't know when I will come off metformin or if I will stay on it the whole nine months, but I'm happy taking it right now.

:hugs:

I was told to take it during the first trimester only. I don't have pcos and am not sure if that makes a difference.

It is commonly used to treat Gestational Diabetes so don't know why your GP would say is unsafe during pregnancy as it's often prescribed to ladies because they have pregnancy complications.

thanks ladies for the reply.

I tried to explain to her about PCOS and why I would be taking it. which would be to help prevent miscarriage and she looked at me and said what would I prefer, A miscarriage or a unhealthy fetus. I couldn't believe it. She knows nothing about pregnancy or getting pregnant. She once told me that I ovulate every 4 weeks whether I have a period or not. ya right. I don't trust her knowledge so I think I will continue taking it until I see my ob. She just made me very worried about taking it now.

I have pcos as well and I was put on metformin, I took metformin until about 14 wks. My ob took me off of it and put me on glyburide, she said they dont know for sure how safe metformin is in the 3rd trimester that why they changed it. I was confused at first too because when I was trying to conceive they said I would have to stay on metformin if I got pregnant to prevent miscarriage. So of course when i was told I would had to stop taking it I freaked out and fought it. After talking with my ob again I felt comfortable switching meds, and baby it totally healthy and I will be 21 wks tomorrow.

For three visits I got to see a very good obgyn- ( he has published many top books on pcos- it's his specialty and passion) he had to fight to see me for more then the first visit- insurance thing..
he told me to take it my whole pregnancy- every other doc tried to take me off it- could have killed the baby-
I have read alot that woman stop taking it after the first tri though- so at 14 weeks I stopped- I wish i could see the good doc again though to talk to him about it-
I stoped cause even though i been on it awhile I always gotten really sick from it- I have stomach issues and kidney issues to begin with- the an endo switched my thyroid meds to crap ones when I told him I already been on those and know I have a reaction- I was vomiting so bad it was streaked with blood- so with all of that and being in second tri- I stopped the metformin. Im worried about it though- I also went back to my old and good thyroid meds (nature throid) it's not a high enough dose though.. but so far baby has been hanging in there and the little bean has been through three trips to the ER for huge kidney stones.. Im scared but most of what the doctors have done has hurt me more then helped so I have to listen to my body since they wont.
but over all from all the info I gathered- it's safer to take it then not- especially in first tri.

I took it until 12 weeks and then weened my self off, I have a happy and healthy 17m DS!

I was not on it when I had my son, started a few months post partum, had 2 miscarriages on it, stopped taking it just over 2 months ago and I'm now 7 weeks

I took metformin for Pcos also and was advised to take during first tri to prevent miscarriage, I did so and have a very healthy 16 month old. I am now pregnant again, did the same and at 22weeks all is going well. Xx
