Aftercare varies from artist to artist....... personally OH and I leave the clingfilm that is put on straight after overnight, i change it at bedtime then after that take it off and clean it really well with an antibacterial wash (i use carex handwash)
then for the first 3 days i use savlon 3 times a day after cleaning.
Then after that I use a vitimin E cream and add a few drops of pure lavender oil to it.
All our tattoos have never peeled or scabbed much and have kept their colour!
I wouldn't use Vaseline, it'll clog the pores. If you wash it gently with a fragrance free soap and water twice a day it should be fine. Don't overdo it though as you don't want to dry it out.
I was told bepanthen. DH and I got inked on the same day but he can't use bepanthen so used vaseline. DH's took ages to heal but I have trouble with moisture in my skin anyway, so to keep it moist when the skin was particuarly dry, occasionally I'd wrap cling flim on with lots of bepanthen (a thin layer but not rubbed in - we were told not to rub it in anyway tbh). I nearly shit when I was cleaning it one morning and I wiped it and all of the scab slid off! (the scab is the colour of the ink you see, so it doesn't really look like a scab) I honestly thought I'd knacked the tattoo! It was fine after that but always put sunscreen on it - or the ink goes from black to green etc.
Keep it moist and pretty much forget about it for a couple of weeks and you'll be fine.
You don't wanna use anything that'll clog the skin, like vaseline. Savlon is bad because it dries the tattoo out. You need to keep a tattoo moisturised.
I'd suggest leaving the cling film on for a minimum of 3 hours, washing it gently, then apply E45 cream twice a day for three weeks (even when I looks healed) if its out in the sun always cover it with sun tan lotion (sun burnt fresh tattoos aren't good...) Never pick or scratch the scabs off a tattoo. Basically treat it like a wound, at the end of the day, that's what it is.
I know what I'm talking about with tattoos, nothing else
For me personally, Tattoo Goo worked the best! And the feeling of rubbing it on is amazing! Gosh I wanna get a new tattoo just to get to do that again lol. With my first tattooes the guy told me to use Vaseline Intensive Care without any fragrance. It worked, but Tattoo Goo seemed to keep the color best, and be the lightest. I always recommend it when my friends get new tattoos.
Vaseline water based unscented lotion is ok, but not Vaseline itself. Just use a plain water based lotion, or just a gentle soap and water and pat dry, do not wipe it.
You really don't want it to 'dry up'. It will scab, that's meant to happen. But if it dries completely and your skin isn't getting any moisture (it won't when covered in scabs) then when you move, the scab will crack and the skin will feel tight. That's just as bad as picking all the scab off!
E45 is very good. I swear by it.
There's a lot of bullcrap going around about tattoo after care. I think its because when the tattoo heals and there's massive gaps in the colour, you'll pay them to do it again.
Any decent tattooist will give you an after care sheet AND talk you through it.
