My neice is 15yrs old. We discovered that she had intercourse for the first time. This was back in Oct. 2008. Her last period was in Sept 08. Her mom had her take 2 in home preg tests, both came out negative. How can this be?

Told her mom to take her to gyno, but she says she doesn't want to expose her to "that type of exam".

Help!

When did she take the tests? x

I think she should go to the doc too. If she is old enough to be having sex, she is old enough for "that type of exam" in my opinion.

Take care! :D

Hmm, it should have shown by then. Maybe if she could take another one, it should definitely show by now.
If not it could be just the fact that she's a teenager and her periods are irregular. They don't stabilize until 2 years after having your first.

I agree. A sexually active teenager should be visiting a Gyno. She could prescribe birth control for her...

It could well just be that she is not pregnant. It takes a long time for teenagers cycles to settle and a teen period can be late for many reasons - not just pregnancy.

Is your niece stressed at all? As this can be a big cause of a delayed period, especially in younger women. If your niece was aware that pregnancy was a possibility then she could well have been worrying and worrying about her period turning up, which would have made it late, and in turn made her even more stressed - delaying the onset of her period by even more time.

Other reasons can be hormonal imbalances, weight gain or loss, or just plain tiredness or emotional disturbances.

Don't assume that the only reason she could be late would be pregnancy. She may just be very tired or stressed. But in any case most teenagers are quite irregular with their cycles and some skip random periods for no seen reason. I would encourage her to take another test now that it is a bit later into this potential pregnancy, but if that comes back negative, the chances are she is fine and not pregnant :)

However if this persists and she does not get a period within the next couple of months I would reccomend her speaking to her doctor about it to investigate possible alternative causes or potential hormonal problems.

Hope she is okay! :hugs:

Agreed. She should be checked out for STI's and STDs too. If she has had unprotected sex she should get "that kind of exam" anyway to check for possible infections. Many STDs have no symptoms whatsoever but can be very harmful if left untreated, so she should definately get herself checked out. Best of luck to her x

Yep agree with ^^ here. Her periods mite just be irregular.

Did she use protection?X

At 14 i never all my tests was neg until bloods at 28 wk so plz take her docs and ask for bloods xxx

i got pregnant at 17 and am 18 now.
But i took..oh had to have been 6 or 7 home tests and every one of them was negative, i went to the dr for a blood test..and found out i was not only pregnant..but i was almost 5 months pregnant. Your neice should see a dr. =):hugs:

If she's already had intercourse I can't see any reason for her not to be "exposed to that kind of exam". It's strictly for her health and a OBGYN is bound to be the most supervised of most typical doctors due to the situation of the procedure.
