Hi ladies,

Just to keep you informed, if you were curious, I have had my results back from my GTT tests today and I have tested positive for Gestational Diabetes. In a funny way, I am kind of relieved. I now know why the baby is big, and I have too much water, so no more tests and worries as to what is going on, and if there is anything wrong with the baby.

I have to go back to the hospital tomorrow, to discuss next steps with the diabetes midwife, diet changes, checking my blood sugar levels etc.... I will have another growth scan in 2 weeks time, and have been told I will be induced between 38-39 weeks.

Has anyone else been diagnosed? It would be nice to speak to people in the same boat, and share experiences.

Hi :winkwink:

I did reply to your post in Third tri.....

I was diagnosed with GD @ 28 weeks, tried controlling with Diet but it didn't work and now I inject insulin 3 times a day.... I was really worried about this at first but it's much easier than I thought. I feel very reassured by all the monitoring that takes place now and know that they are keeping a close eye on me.

I was told that I would be induced at 38 weeks, but maybe 37, this will be confirmed at my appointment in just over a week.

If you need anything please let me know, If I can help I will do :hugs:

thanks, went to see the diabetes mw this morning, and have to try and control it with changes to diet.... i cant believe how much sugar is in food when you are looking for it !! I also have the finger prick machine that i have to prick my finger with 3 times a day, and take a reading... gotta call mw mext week to discuss results of this... hopefully i will be able to manage it this way, and wont require insulin.... its only for 3-4 weeks max, im just very upset that I cant have any easter eggs this year !!!! : (

I was diagnosed at 28 weeks to, I am currently quite happily controlling it with diet only and I havent really had to change my diet. Don't worry about easter eggs you can indulge in moderation! xxx

im in this boat too i think. my fingers are bleeding sore though from checking levels.

i see consultant tuesday, can i ask what you sugar levels were to need insulin. im worried as i had to have insulin when i was sick in october due to steroids for asthma. i dont really want it again.

hi i had gd twice on 2pregs and then was diagnosed with diabetes last year..i was insulin dependant on all pregnancies and on this one was insulin dep at early stage 14weeks..when not preg i am just diet controlled..i have to inject 4times a day 32units of insulin and my morning bloods were 6-7 and after meals 6-11 so then they put me on it..

I have to keep my levels and hour after eating below 7.8, my clinic are really strict on it, I was managing to keep about 1/2 of my tests under this but they did start to get worse. I was put on insulin about 2 weeks after trying to control with diet, and now I'm having to increase the insulin dose most weeks as my hormones are increasing.

I understand you not wanting to take insulin, that's how I was but now I know it's not that bad and I would rather that, than take any risks for me or my baby....

Good Luck, I hope it goes ok for you

Hi ladies,

Does anyone know if there are increased risks of baby having abnormalities with GD? I thought it was just Macrosomia (big baby) and shoulder dysfractia..... but i read something about increased risk of Downs Syndrome. I dont want to frighten anyone, but now i am petrified of this.... My NT scan was 1.4mm, and 20wk scan was all fine too..l but now ive got myself really worried about this, and any other problems this may cause to baby....

no i have never heard that and i had high risk for downs and diabetic..i am sure my consultant would of told me this if it was linked..i have done alot of research linking to downs and it is a chromosonal condition and it is an extra gene at time of conception and nothing to do with mothers condition..
where did you read this? as i am very curious now..
the only other thing that can happen when diabetes is involved is the placenta can stop working after 38weeks due to poor sugar control..

I have gestational diabetes as well, was diagnosed at 9 weeks and have been insulin dependant since 11 weeks.

not yet, but I had GD with my previous two children. With my daughter, I had insulin dependent. The diet kind of sucks if you really love lots of fruit, like I do. Other than that...I actually felt better on the diet...probably from the lower sugar levels. LOL! The good news is, once your baby is delivered...it is all over with.

i think it was something to do with the excess fluid... is also a marker for downs.... but nothing else has been waid about it... i would assume that any downs markers would have been picked up on a 20 week scan at least???

the hospital gave me metformin to take. they are also strict about the numbers. they have been blippinh a little high even with the meds. im presumingt this is because as hormones increase it makes everything else worse.
