For anyone breastfeeding or used to breast feed. To give tips and stories on feeding in public, and for you to share the positives and the negatives.

I am still yet to feed my little man in public, the most I have managed is in the car is ASDA car park lol.

I'd love to be able to feed him anywhere without a second thought... so maybe we can help each other out and achieve that for those who want to.

Btw I'm Jane 24 with baby Jaiden 8 weeks old x

I have just ordered a nursing cover, i'm hoping this will help me with being able to feed in public. I find the breastfeeding tops really tricky especially as she can't latch on by herself yet.

I bought mine from ebay for approx £13 including delivery from the USA.

Looks good hun you will have to let us all know how good it is. DS can't latch on his own either, so to feed in public would mean the whole thing on show, lol. x

I've been feeding in public since she was 5 days old. I have a Hooter Hider, nursing cover, whatever you want to call them. I LOVE it! I nurse while grocery shopping, on my daily walk. It's not as often now, because she can go longer between feeds. I don't let her schedule of feeds dictate my day. She's still eating every 2-3 hours, if I did that, between naps, I'd never leave the house! With a blanket it would be impossible as now she is pulling on everything.

I like the nursing shirts with either the V-neck because in public, people can't see you are doing anything.

Good luck! It does get easier!!

The first time I went out with my LO and he got hungry, I just could not feed him in public, I bolted and went to the car. Now I am fine, and have no problem.

I like to wear a tank top and a shirt over, so I can pull the shirt up and the tank down. That way you can't really see my boob, and sometimes I will cover with a blanket, but he doesn't seem to like that, and it makes us both hot.

His latching will get better as he gets older and a bit stronger!

I LOVE my post-natal yoga class. We can nurse anytime we need. Last week, I looked up and 9 out of 19 mama's were nursing. It was just so lovely.

Do you do the yoga with the babies?

Yes, it is sooo much fun. The beginning of class we do yogo, then we do some stuff holding the babies, then we get down in the floor and do little yoga stretches with them, their arms and legs.

I have something like this, it's a nursing poncho(except mine has very thin holes near the top so you can see baby).

After almost 10 months I've got no shame. I just lift my top and put her on. I actually had my sister babysitting for me on tuesday night and Kaya was awake when I got home, so I just popped her on. She then came off and I was totally oblivious to the fact that my whole breast was on show for a good 20 seconds. It wasn't until after my sister had left that I realised what I had done! I had to apologise to her yesterday for flashing her! lol! I put it down to being in my own home, it being night time and us having an absorbing conversation. - That or I'm just a hussy.

i have always bf jack in public when i needed to and have been lucky enough to have a baby with a good latch i have a few nusring tops but i mostly do what samantha does and wear 2 tops. it does get easier and u will get more confident. jack wont let me use a nusring cover he hates having his head covered whilst feeding x

i wear a tank top under my tshirt so i lift my tshirt up and my tank top down so nobody can see my stomach (if i had a nice stomach i wouldnt wear a tank top lol!) i tend to feed anywhere!

I have nursed Brooklynn in public quite a bit. We live rural so I can't just wait till we get home. I have nursed her in Starbucks a couple of times, resturants, the car, the park, and at the fall fair. Oh, and my friends living room with her 4 children watching ( I guess I'm more interesting than tv) :)

I usually try to position myself with my back to the flow of traffic. I have larger boobs so I have to help her to latch on and hold my boob for her. I don't really like the nursing tops too much mostly because I have difficulties with them so I generally have a tank top on. I lift it as far as I need to, put a receiver over my shoulder so that I'm not looking for one to burp her. When she is latched I just pull my tank back down to just above where her face is and she has at 'er. This has started many conversations. In Canada it is law that you can't disturb a nursing mother. But I have also had little kids ask their moms, grandmas, and whomever what I'm doing and they get told that that is how babies eat.

this is a good thread! I thought it was just me who has fears of feeding in public, i think i'll be housebound, iv fed infront of my mum, sister and auntie, and that was ok, still very fumbly at the moment though and milk ends up everywhere. it will all come with practice I guess!

thnaks for the thread, love it!

I've got one of those and I love it! I do feed Sam a lot when I'm out and if there aren't too many people around I don't bother with it (I just wear two tops and pull one up and one down and you don't see anything) but it's great when you're surrounded by people/cctv cameras...on train platforms etc. And I used to to feed him at the dinner table when we were at a wedding recently - partly because he likes to look around at everything which leaves me sitting there half topless...not the look I was going for at a formal dinner :laugh2: x

I dont feel very comfortable feeding in public, and I dont think my OH is keen on me doing it either. Its unfortunate but we've found ways around it

xxx

 at the rhyming! Hope you like the nursing cover! Took me a few goes to get used to it and learn to control the fingers sticking through the neck hole to grab my nose but I love it! x

Ive breastfed my son in public numerous times. I have a hooter hider too, and they really work well. My son doesn't really like being covered when he BFs, so that created a problem, but he got used to it.

hey hun how have you found ways around it ? Do you find somewhere private ? Its something I keep thinking about over again but I guess I wont know til I actually brave going out for the day!

Great thread! I didn't know you could get nursing covers, so that's useful knowledge to have now!

I'm not comfortable about the idea of nursing in public either, but I'll just have to see how it goes when LO arrives. ATM I'm think I'll probably just try to find somewhere private, or as private as possible. I don't think I would want to breastfeed in front of family. My dad does not need to see that!
