Wondering if the glucose test your doctor recommends is mandatory? 4 weeks ago my doctor had given me a form to go and get it done between certain weeks but I never thought to ask if it’s mandatory that I get it done or not. Just hating the part where i would have to sit at the lab for an entire hour after drinking the juice. I have another appointment with her tomorrow afternoon so I’ll be asking her to double check but just thought I’d ask here in the meantime.

Its just to make sure that you don't have diabetes of pregnancy which can actually be very harmful to yourself and your baby if it goes undiagnosed. I actually have decided that if I have a third baby I am going to request to just do the 3 hour test because I failed the one hour both times but passed the 3 hour. I do know that if you don't want to do the drink you can do a blood check for about 2 weeks. You just have to prick your finger 3 times and day and monitor your sugar levels.

Usually no medical testing is "mandatory" - but that's all dependent on where you live and if there are any actual consequences/repercussions to opting out of something.

I did a glucose test with my first but not with my second as I am very low risk. Most moms will do it each time though just to be on the safe side.

Probably depends on the practice you are with. With both my pregnancies have used midwives and I have opted out of the glucose test. Discussed at length with said midwives and determined I was low risk.

Thanks ladies... I decided to just get it over with this morning and sat there for an hour. Afterwards my doctor did say it wasn’t mandatory but recommended. Glad I got that over with!

I tried to put mine off as I didnt think it would be an issue. Finally went and did actually have gestational diabetes. It was easily managed by diet but I did have to keep up with testing my sugar. If things get out of control can be harmful.

Hmm...my test came back fine I’m assuming because she had the secretary call me to say my iron levels were low and that I need to take an extra 300mg of it. I wonder what caused this...I stopped eating veggies because they aren’t as appealing to me anymore might be the reason ?

Glad to hear your glucose test results are good! As for iron levels, it's odd but I guess some people do have the tendency to go low during pregnancy.

Glad you went! It's worth doing, GD can cause some horrible problems during pregnancy and delivery so it's best to know if you have it so they can accommodate :)
