Well, now that little man is almost 2 months old (time flies!), I figure it's time for his birth story. I will try my best to remember everything as accurately as possible.
Monday Sept 2 (39+4)
I had been so frustrated and was done being pregnant. I had tried everything possible to get things moving but nothing was working. I wasn't dilated but starting to thin out. Around noon, I went out for lunch and shopping with my aunt. As we were eating, I started having contractions. They were nothing like BH. More like intense period cramps. I went on two walks that day. One when I got home around 2 and again around 8 pm after dinner. The contractions were very irregular and not changing at all so I decided to go to sleep.
Tuesday Sept 3 (39+5)
5 am I awoke in so much pain. The contractions we getting pretty painful. I really couldn't talk through them and had to hold on to a wall just in case. I slept on and off until 10 am. I still could not time them, so at 2 pm I stopped by my doctors to get checked. I was 2 cm and 70% effaced. He did a sweep and told me it would likely happen in the next couple of days. Went for a walk with hubby around 5 pm and then watched tv while he was playing video games. I started losing bits of my plug after the walk. I took a bath and relaxed. All night I was losing my plug and bleeding (old brown blood) and having a lot of mucus. At 11 pm I took the dog outside. I had a contraction, felt like I had to pass gas (tmi). I pushed a little and my water broke. It felt like a water balloon popped in between my legs and it gushed everywhere.
Wednesday Sept 4 (39+6)
My mom had really quick labors, so after my water broke we decided to head to the hospital. Got to the hospital at 12:30 am. I got checked and I was only 3 cm. Since my water had already broken, I was admitted. We got a labor and delivery room around 3 am. I planned to do everything naturally and I remember saying to my hubby "If everything continues like this, it'll be easier than I thought" lol. Around 4 am I got some stadol to ease my pain so I could sleep through my contractions. I was checked off and on until noon but I don't remember much because the stadol made me so out of it. At 11 am, I had been stuck at 5 cm for hours. It had already been 12 hours since my water broke and they wanted to use pitocin. I already knew that if I got pitocin, that I would need an epidural. I agreed. Everything went smoothly with the epidural, until the pitocin kicked in. I told the nurse that I had a spot on my left side where I could still feel everything. She had me change positions and left the room. I went to sleep and woke up an hour later screaming in pain. The contractions were back to back and off the charts. The "hot spot" on my left side had not gone away so I could feel everything. I had to endure that pain for a whole hour until I could get another epidural. Around 1, I got another epidural. This one made me unable to move my legs. The baby's heart rate was dropping with each contraction so I had to change positions every 30 min or so. I was checked again at 4 pm. A 7, finally! At 4:30 hubby wanted to go get snacks, but I wanted to get checked first because I was starting to feel pressure. In 30 min, I went from a 7 to a 9 1/2. I pushed for 20 min and out he came.
I did end up tearing the top layer of skin and required a few stitches, but other than that it was good.
Kenneth Tristan Furtaw was born the day before his due date on Sept 4, 2013 at 4:57 pm. He was 7 lbs 5 oz and 20 1/2 inches long.
