This is going to sound rediculous, but I don't really understand nappies!

I'm a total newbie to nappies- I have no idea which ones to get, what size, how the sizes work, how many I will need, which ones work best etc!?

Who can elighten me? I've heard good things about pampers but will be on a tight budget month to month. I have looked at reusables but they're not for me (after much research).

Please help, I feel really silly!! x

In the end, a nappy is a nappy. Its job is to collect urine and feces so it doesn't get on the clothes or bed. From what I've heard, every baby is different, and what works for one baby might not work for the next. There really is no major difference between the different brands, other than fit and personal preference. Why don't you set aside the money you're planning to spend on nappies and just buy a newborn pack for the first little bit, then buy as you need?

Editing to add: Think of it like feminine hygiene products. My best friend finds that OB works best for her. I like tampax. Neither is right or wrong, and the only way we discovered what we like is through trial and error.

We used pampers swaddlers with DD1 so that's what we're stocking up on this time too.

Luvs did not work for DD1, but they are cheaper and work for some other people.

Do you have Target? Their brand of diapers are pretty good! And cheap! Or Sams Club, Cosco, etc (not sure if you have these there though)

What I have found is that we did not use NB size with DD1 hardly at all, just what the hospital gave us. Unless you have a really small baby, size 1 should work from the git go. So that's all we've stocked up on so far, and size 1's tend to last a long time. I don't really remember when we had to go up to size 2, but I will probably start buying a couple packs to have when we need them.

It's really confusing, because everyone has different tips, etc, because every baby is different lol. I hope I helped you some, and didn't confuse you more! :)

Also, if you could sign up for the diaper companys, here they send us free samples. Then you could have a few to try and choose which one you like best

Thank you ladies, I think I might just buy one or two packs to keep me going and see what happens! Its so confusing but I liked the tampon analogy!! :D xx

There is a free huggies newborn pack when you register with asda baby club, you print off the voucher and take it to asda and its in the baby isle.. Inside is a hat, a pack of number 1 nappies and a pack of wipes ... all for free.. and there is vouchers inside for more money off so you can get another pack of nappies and wipes for i think it works out as £1.71 or something. But you can print your voucher twice so you can get two lots..

As for the nappies you start off with number one.. I think these go up to 11lb in weight and when you feel they are getting tight you move up to the next size.

I always use pampers but I get them when they are on mega offers like in Asda - they just had a baby event on and they had big boxes of 100+ nappies down to £7 from £14.

If you cant get them at a price like that then I have heard a lot of good things about Asdas own nappies - Little Angels.

My LO was born 6 lb 15 oz and went through 400 size 1 nappies.

Size 1 are up to 11 lbs.

Then she went through around 200 size 2 then onto about 600 size 3. There is an overlap with size 2 and 3.

I stocked up with around 1500 nappies before LO was born - I know lots folk will say not to do this, but I have never had any problems with any brands of nappies, so will be stocking up again for this baby.

At the start you could use 7-10 nappies a day.

Most times if you buy them in the jumbo size boxes it works out a lot cheaper than buying them week to week.

Sign up to pampers/huggies/asda/tesco babyclubs and they send you out vouchers for money off nappies/wipes etc.

When buying nappies I aim for under 7p a nappy and know if its around that, then thats a good deal! If you buy the average 30 pack of pampers you are looking at around 15p a nappy which is expensive!:flower:

I have bought a mix of brands to see which work for us best.
I have got some Asda baby ones as they are meant to be good and they were quite cheap.
Look out for offers and vouchers in such as your emmas diary/bounty packs you can use to reduce the cost.
Also, you could look on Amazon and bulk buy a big box of a particular brand you find works for you.
I personally didn't find much difference between pampers and huggies with my dd in newborn sizes, but as she grew pampers worked best for her.
xx

We used Pampers from the beginning. He's wearing Huggies right now, but only because Sam's Club didn't have size 6 Pampers in stock. :dohh: Turns out Huggies fit him better... but it really does vary from baby to baby!

My general rule on when to go up a size is when the diaper either starts feeling like it won't close all the way/is a little tight or when it starts leaking poop up the back or out a leg hole. :haha:

were going for pampers heard a lot of good feedback and i had a voucher off them plus they are on offer at asda. the sizes are on the box i got size 2 which is from 6lb to 13 lb xx

I've went for pampers, they were great value at the time when the baby event was on

I'll be trying to use Luv's which is an offshoot of pampers unless the baby has an allergy like OH did to every disposable brand. Depending on the baby you may be able to jump right into size 1 so I wouldn't get a ton of newborn diapers.

From what I've read and I could be wrong most newborns use 6-10 diapers a day so that's 42 to 70 a week and 180 to 300 diapers a month. As they get older and into bigger sizes the diaper usage should go down unfortunately the price doesn't seem to. I noticed that the diaper price stayed the same and the number of diapers just went down when you move up a size.

What we're doing to save money is going through Amazon. Their Amazon Mom promotion takes 15% off baby items and subscribe and save takes an additional 15% off giving you 30% off and free shipping.

Try not to stock up too much, you may not need as many as you think. My lo outgrew sizes 1-3 because of her height, she had not reached the size limit on the pack.
We use pampers, and found huggies seemed to leak.
If you are looking for non branded at a good price, kiddicare.com do big boxes which have been recommended. Or asda little angels get very good write ups on here.

If you are expecting lo to weigh less than 6lb at birth you will need size 0 to start. Otherwise most people start with size 1

Im using Pampers, I've heard they are the best for boys especially, don't buy many size 1s or newborn. My LO is in size 2 and he is 3 weeks old. Pampers are better I think as they go further up the back.

I tried huggies and they leaked.
Little angels from Asda are quite good too but I still go back to Pampers. Buy them in bulk and they are not anymore expensive than others and worth the little bit extra in my opinion.

Don't worry! Nobody has a clue till they actually have to clean the we'd bum that us in front of them- then you figure it out!

We used huggies newborn size 1 in hosp- bubs was 8lbs 4
before she was born I bought 2 little packs of huggies sz1, 1 pack of asda little angels, 1 pack of tescos own and 2 packs of pampers.

We worked our way through them and didn't find a huge amount of difference.

I wasn't keen on pampers and hubby wasn't keen on asda.

I had bought an 80 box of pampers sz2 in baby event so at 4 weeks when she moved up a size we worked through them. I thought they had a strong chemically smell so now we have settled on huggies.

Sorry for long winded post but just wanted to reassure you that we didn't have a clue either but just used triAl and error!!!

i try to mainly use cloth but when we use sposies i use tescos own brand ones i find them the most absorbant and the least chemically also when the boys do a mega pee they dont turn to jelly and feel all gross and heavy either
