Amelia is 7 weeks old and has been suffering with bad constipation for 3+ weeks. We switched her from Cow & Gate first infant milk to Cow & Gate comfort to see if that would help (and to see if it would help her wind too). But it hasn't made the slightest bit of difference to her constipation. Her wind is a little better but not sure if it's the milk or because I started using gripe water/colic drops.

She doesn't poo for 3-4 days, which I know can be normal, but her poo is extremely hard and really difficult for her to pass (it takes her a long time and she cries from it). Once the hard poo has passed, she then explodes a load of runny/watery poo. It's like it's all built up.

Went to see the doctor about it today and she said because of her age, and the fact that she simply has an immature digestive system at this stage, there's nothing she can give her. I asked if I should try another brand of milk, and she said I could but that it probably wouldn't make much difference.

But I have to try.. I can't just leave her in pain. We've tried giving her water between feeds (which she refuses) and also water with a little apple/orange juice in it, as advised by health visitor (which she also refuses).

I have heard great things about the Hipp first infant milk so would love some reviews on it to see if I should try her on that. No point in me trying Aptamil as it's exactly the same as C&G anyway. Doctor told me to stay away from SMA too.

Please help!

Have you tried giving a little bit of diluted juice via syringe?

Unfortunately we had to stop using hipp due to ds' reflux, and out him in SMA staydown. Hipp was better than aptamil, but the problem with aptamil was a mixing issue clogging the teats. A lot of people haven't experienced that though.

Aptamil and cow & gate aren't the same. Cow & gate for starters is somewhat thicker, not much but it is. Dd could not get on with cow and gate at all and a switch to aptamil made life a lot better. However as aptamil is a more expensive formula it may be best to try hipp first if you really feel the need to change.

I've always been anti SMA after reading the reviews but SMA staydown has done the world of good for my ds, and SMA gold did the same thing for a friends dd. You never know what formula a baby will get on with. I've learnt a harsh lesson in that with ds!

My LO was constipated on Sma with gaviscon mixed in, I switched to hipp with gaviscon and he's now going twice a day and its really soft like a thick sauce lol. It makes me worry that if he didn't have gaviscon he would have extremely loose BMs with Hipp but I've not tried it on its own so don't really know.
