Tori woke up and clearly has chicken pox. Shes got her calamine lotion, but what else helped you? She seems happy enough so far, but I expect her to be upset and grumbling for the next week

Calamine cream (not lotion) stored in the fridge - instant soothing and doesn't dry out like the lotion

DS hates the lotion, we're currently in day 6 of it. I've been doing oat/baking soda baths once or twice a day, piriton and paracetamol as needed and dermol 500 cream which we had in the house for a previous issue but is meant to be gentle for itchy skin. Last two days, we're seeing an end to the itchiness at least. But still covered in them.

I remember having chicken pox as a kid and I remember feeling pretty normal, aside from the itch! My mom used calamine lotion. If she has a fever or pain when the spots are developing, tylenol (paracetamol in the uk?) is your best bet.

Sorry, no amazing miracle treatment here :)

DS wouldnt allow me to apply the lotion so I put it in his bath twice a day which seemed to help and left him in cotton PJs x

I heard raving reviews about virasoothe. But when Ben had it he wasn't grumpy or anything, he just had about 30 spots that didn't bother him much (apart from the cluster on his willy, ouch!) he was more annoyed at staying in for so long!

We used virasoothe, it's fab. Dyl wasn't bothered at all by the pox

Baking soda baths as many as day as poss!! (Mine love the bath!!) xx

Definitely get virasooth, it's brilliant. Evie was inconsolable the first night of chicken pox, but the second night with the Virasooth was a different story. Also if lo is in a lot of discomfort alternate Calpol and ibuprofen so they get pain meds every 2 hours.

And piriton helps, it also makes them drowsy so could help if she's struggling to sleep while poorly

Was told by the Gp not to use camomile lotion and try to resist using anything on the spots. My son's never travelled above his waist and stayed mostly on his legs and bottom. Only one spot scarred and none became infected. We used piroten as required and he had bicarbonate soda baths.

Somehow I think I must have unsubbed this thread by accident!

We've used calamine lotion but not a lot to be honest :/ She doesnt seem all that bothered.

When would you reckon its safe for her to go back to nursery. We're fine with her at home, im just concerned about her not seeing her friends!

NHS exclusion criteria are 5 days from onset of rash and technically they're not meant to exclude for longer than that assuming fever has gone and child OK in themselves. However a lot of nurseries will ask for all spots to be scabbed over which used to be the guidance. Your nursery will have a policy best to call and ask to be certain. HTH.

I gave them a call and as long as they have all scabbed over its fine. Thank you :)

LO had chickenpox 3 months ago - Oatmeal baths several times a day really helped as did piriton and aqueous calamine cream, loose clothes and keeping him cool - sweat is supposed to make them very itchy. I trimmed his nails down as much as I could as he would scratch in his sleep.
