GUTTED:cry:

I suspected I may have thrush around my nips a couple of weeks ago, there was some redness and the area was a little itchy. HOwever no other of the 'bad' symptoms the internet warned me about.

Took myself to the doc's and bub got Nystan oral suspension (even though she has no symptoms) and I got canesten cream. WELL.... my symptoms seemed to have worsened since using all the above. Area seems redder, and larger, and the skni around the areolas is dry. HAs anyone else experienced this?

TODAY, Gracie was crying with hunger but kept bobbing on and off the boob getting really frustrated. AM frightened I either have no milk, or she doesn't like the feel of my wrecked nipple in her mouth!!! Am going to have to give her a few oz of formula as wont have her starving. I really hope this isn't the end of bf.... but am at a loss at what to do if she continues unhappy to feed from me.

Anyone been here and can offer advice?

Go back to the doctor. It could be that your skin is reacting to the cream. He should give you either another cream to try or a tablet to take.

Call the doc and tell him it's not working and you need something else immediatly! So sorry hun, I hope it clears up quickly!!!

Thanks - looks like I'm in for a long weekend!!! V sore, will get back to docs to see if they is any other treatment available!! I soooooooo dont want to give up feeding :(

The think is, if it is thrush, stopping feeding wouldn't get rid of it anyway. Doesn't help with the pain I know, but you can pop painkillers.

stopped using canestan yesterday and today the redness isn't as 'angry' looking. I'd rather it stayed as it was before the blooming doctor got involved! I can cope with it then.

Going to look at natural remedies..... i read something about Gentian Violet, washes bubs mouth and i apply to nips to sooth and remedy! Will give anything a go!

I went to out of hours Drs today, as have been on antibiotics and got really red and itchy nipples. They checked baby and said she did have it but were going to treat me for thrush. Thinking about it - not sure that makes sense surely we should both be treated. Can you get your self to an out of hours Dr to change your treatment. Bloody fugus.............

Hope it improves soon and you manage to feed through.

I did see the doc for it - He gave me some cream and my little one some liquid ofr her mouth, but she hates it, tastes of anaceed! The pain carried on for another day or so, but seems to have gone down a bit, it was worse in left breast as she feeds more from that (doesn't like the right).

I had thrush a fair few times. I used Dactaren (sp?) oral gel. I put it on before every feed and it helped. Not recommended for bubs under 6 months, I had it when savannah was a 2 weeks or so old and it never harmed her.

Hi hun

I've had thrush a few times whilst BF and it kept coming back until i got a 2 week course of fluconazole 400mg on first day then 200mg everyday for 2 weeks, it cleared it up and haven't had it since. This is the recommended dose for thrush in the nipple as advised by La leche league cos the standard treatment for vaginal thrush is not sufficient to eliminate it in the breast apparently!!! Which proved to be true in my experience as it just kept coming back after 3 days it was horrible.

I had to take a hand out to the docs with me i got from my BF councillor as the research is all referenced on there as i'm sure they wouldn't of listened otherwise :dohh:

:hugs: does it hurt when you express milk? I'm finding that expressing is less painful so am doing it every night at the moment to give my nipples a break. It might help til you can get everything sorted. I highly recommend the Medela Swing Pump (I got one for £30 off ebay :) )

Hi Elm,

Sadly i never have been able to express much milk off, despite hiring a super, industrial size pump from the hospital!! Booooooooo. Will have to get back to dr's now i've read about the course of tablets i may need!! Now i stopped the canestan cream, i'm less sore. Must have been too harsh on me??!!.

I'm sorry i don't i got the hand out from the LLL leader in my area at my local bosom buddies meeting, i'll try and find one for you online.

Sorry you've not been able to express much Freya. Hope you've got your tablets now and you're all sorted out.

Thanks vicwick - I went to see a bf mw on Monday and she wrote a letter to my dr requesting a prescription for fluconazole. Because it's off license (i.e. not recommended for breastfeeding because it's not been tested for breastfeeding women but a lower dose gets to your baby than can be prescribed for a premature baby) I had to wait til today to get it. I've got 150mg followed by 50mg twice a day for ten days. Had to remind my dr that Elliot would also need a prescription!!! Really glad he's got no symptoms, would make things so much worse if he had a sore mouth too.

I've never heard of 'bosom buddies' before! Love it!!! Ours is just a 'baby cafe' or something!

Sorry for not reading the whole thread - just about to go to bed so replying quickly...I had thrush when Sam was about 4 months too - so, so painful, and the cream did nothing for me at all - it just got worse.

He had the nystan oral suspension which was fine, and the doctor prescribed me a course of fluconazole - a huge loading dose (400mg?), then 50mg (I think) tablets to take each day for 2 weeks - it's really important that you carry on taking them after you're pain free for a whole week, so go back if you don't have enough to cover it. I thought it wasn't helping and had to go back for a 2nd course of pills but it did clear it up. Really hope it gets better for you soon :hugs: x

Glad you got sorted hun

Hows it feeling??? Any better?

The baby cafes sound fab, my nearest one is too far away but Bosom buddies is great, i'm doing a peer supporter course next week so really looking forward to that. Would love to train to be a lactation consultant and help other Mammys like my BF counsellor helped me i could not of done it without her she's fab

I'm still having the odd pain, didn't help that Elliot wasn't latched on right earlier :dohh: , I'm on day 3 of taking them so REALLY hoping it's all feeling better by tomorrow so I don't have to sort out another prescription.

I'm moving away from my lovely baby cafe, will have to travel for ages to get to it if I can't find one that's as nice close to!!!

I'm a bit concerned that I've had a lower dose than you did when it cleared up.. I'm still using Daktarin (sounds like some Dr Who badies - the Daktarins are attacking...) cream so maybe that'll help too.

Hope you enjoy the course - bet there'll be loads of nice people on it!

 x
