Hi,

I went to the midwife yesterday and she said my thyroid levels are up and she had to repeat bloods.

Ive never had any issues before with my thyroid and they did the tests in hospital when i was in with hyperemesis.

I asked the midwife for more info yesterday and she basically said she wasnt the right person to go into detail, she said i would see a consultant who would go into much more detail. Needless to say i came home and straight away googled thyroid in pregnancy and now im really worried.

Anyone any experience with this?

No advice hun but didn't want to r&r:hugs:
I've had issues with Dr Google too, he's a nasty piece of work. When is your appointment with the consultant? Have you tried the complications section? I know the ladies in there have tons of advice:flower:

you can google the levels for pregnancy- it can be controlled if your doc knows what they are doing- tsh is optimal if it's around 2.
the normal range is higher then that but you want optimal- also make sure they check your free t3 and free t4- make them- they will try not to- and those numbers you want in the higher end of normal.

I've always had hypothyroid (since I was like 13) but it got worse during pregnancy, where your tsh should be 2-3 mine was at 12. Though it had been controlled totally for 15 years, the pregnancy made it go nuts.

Don't worry about it!! When you see the doctor they will put you on synthroid and it'll take about 2-3 weeks for you to be all balanced out. That's what happened to me. Be sure to ask for blood work again about 6 weeks after you start meds to make sure you're on the right dose.

After you deliver, your thyroid function should go back to pre-pregnancy level and you'll be fine! Hope this helps!

They can put you on Synthroid and it will be fine. I was referred to a high risk dr because I was on Synthroid before pregnancy. My doctor said absolute worst case scenario is that the baby would have a goiter and be too big to pass in the birth canal, resulting in a c-section. After birth, the goiter would go away since the baby is no longer being influenced by the mother's hormones. My high risk dr. said that in her 15 years of practice she has seen one baby with a goiter, so it's not very common. After being on Syntroid, my levels are normal. The medicine really does the trick.

Hi- I have hypothyroidism and have been on meds for a few years now.... I get my blood tested every month of pregnancy... I only had to adjust meds once during pregnancy and everything else is fine. They should just be able to give you a pill to take each day and everything should be good. Good luck.

Hi I never suffered with my thyroid but like you had Hyperemisis with this pregnancy. After my first hospital stay I found out my thyroid level was low and have been referred to specialist. I was told it could be to do with Hyperemisis and also the fact that I'm having twins.
My own GP has since done bloods and the levels are back to normal now but I'll be getting bloods every 4 weeks to monitor.
It's pretty common in pregnancy. The fact that you are past the first trimester is a good sign. I had it at 18w and am now almost 26w with everything fine and looking well.
Try not to worry. If your levels don't return to normal themselves there are meds you can take which are perfectly safe and once baby is born you can ease up on these meds then.

I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism at 12 weeks pregnant with this baby. Like you I was terrified and the first endocrinologist that saw me basically told me it looked grim. However, I was referred to the combined endocrinology/ obstetric clinic and they've been great. My pregnancy is now lead by the consultants there and I'm seen every four weeks. They're great, I'm on carbimozole to block my thyroid gland production, it's safe for baby but better to be on the lowest dose possible, so they've been checking my levels regularly and lowering the dose if I'm stable. I will also have frequent growth scans from 28weeks as it can affect baby's growth. Most importantly once it's under control with meds your pregnancy can be considered normal, but kept an eye on. Best of luck to you xx

Thankyou all for you replies! Feel a little better now knowing it will me controlled with meds. Midwife rang to say my levels are better but still not within normal range. Mw is going to discuss with consultant on Thursday a plan and make me an appointment to see her. Im already consultant led and will have extra growth scans at 28 and 34 weeks so im hoping apart from taking extra mediciation things will be dtraight forward. Will this explain why im so tired all the time, getting headaches and also still 2kg lighter than pre pregnancy?

It could explain all that. The thyroid messes with your weight. I lost 25 pounds before getting pregnant after taking the medicine for 3 months, and I have lost 16 more since being pregnant. So your Thyroid can cause you to gain or lose weight.

Hun don't stress - thyroid probs are easily controlled with meds and with proper monitoring your bubba will be at no risk. What was your tsh? I've got hashimotos disease and my thyroid bounces between hyper and hypo often. I'm usually tested every 6-8 weeks when not preg and my meds are adjusted accordingly. Now that I'm preg they check me every 3 weeks. So far I've only had to change my meds once.
Like you I'm 2kg lighter than pre preg weight (I'm 18weeks preg tomorrow) but I'm putting that didn't to my continuing morning sickness. Thyroid issues will exhaust you but it sounds like you're in good hands so don't worry. Just rest lots and take it as easy as you can. How far along are you?

Thankyou for your replies. They didnt actually tell me what it was as it was just a phonecall but i will definitely ask when i gk back and see the midwife or the consultant!

Im 18 + 2 today but im overweight already and had horrible sickness so thought it may be just that why im loosing weight!
