I'm having an elective section a week on friday, after having an emergency one with my son (now 16months old), was just wondering to the people who have experienced BOTH emcs and elcs, did u find there was much difference in procedure/recovery?
I was high as a kite by time they decided for emcs with my son so everything was cloudy and I actually went to sleep whilst they stitched me up!
I'm guna be 100% with it this time and to be quite frank its scaring the cr*p out of me!
How was spinal with elective? Painful or not?
Recovery?
Bleeding after?
Will they suck mucus plug out when I'm open too? (Sorry!)
Any differences and similarities ?

Thankyou :)

Hi!! I want to calm your nerves by telling you how amazing my elective csection was. I had an emcs and I really struggled with the pain, breastfeeding was a nightmare and overall had a horrible experience. This time I chose to have an elective so that I was more in control. The only stressful part was that my surgery was postponed to the next day because of emergencies. The surgery this time was very calm and the theatre staff were really friendly and chatty. Everything was explained along the way and my little man was born quite quickly screaming his little head off!!! He was given to my Dh while I was stitched but we had skin to skin and breastfed about half an hour later for a good hour before going to recovery. They remove everything and give decent pain relief. I did find the spinal a little bit painful but not awful. The pain afterwards was no where near as bad as with my emcs but I still took all the painkillers I was offered. I was up and about the next day and home after 2 days. My bleeding was heavy for the first 2 days but very light after that, it's actually been stopping and starting ever since. I did have really bad wind pain but the staff will give you stuff for that. I was also constipated after but that is also very common. I was actually walking around Tesco when lo was 5 days old and although a little sore I felt fab. I would definitely do it all over again and am so glad I made the decision to have an elective. Good luck, I'm sure you'll do fab xxx

Hey there, I was booked in for an elective but ended up needing an emergency section at 37 weeks. the most painful bit for me was the spinal going in, it felt like a bad bee sting oh and IV drip, make sure you ask for it in your arm, as they tried both my hands first and it was awful, but my in my arm I hardly felt a thing. The procedure was pretty much the same from then on as an elective, since you are awake and feel pressure and tugging and then Viola your lovely LO comes out, even with an emcs my hubby could still hold her first and cut the cord but I had to wait a couple of hours as I was very delirious and anxious due to my blood pressure and my anxiety disorder, also my little girl had breathing issues so was taken to the special care unit which was hard but in your case it wont be like that as an elective is planned around 39 weeks when baby is not too early to come out, with me they HAD to remove her because my health was failing.
The recovery was not that bad, for an emcs I was expecting lots of pain but it was manageable and i had morphine the first night then paracetamol and voltaren and codeine the next three days and on day four I went home on just codeine and paracetamol. I had my section at 4pm on tuesday and was having a shower with help at 4pm the next day and the day after that I was walking around and showering on my own and sitting up holding baby. Physically my recovery has not been too bad and the scar is barely noticable, the stretch marks are much worse but mentally I am not too good as the baby blues have hit me hard because thats just something inherent in me with my history of mental illness so even though most women get blues for a couple of days mine are going on a bit longer and are likely to last four to six weeks but hey at least I am okay physically

aside from no being able to drive or do washing and lift things heavier than my baby for four weeks, everything is back to normal :hugs:

emcs first time around, awful for me, i was put under general aneasthetic, struggled with the pain in recovery after, took me a while to get back on my feet, breastfeeding struggled, i was a bit traumatised tbh....elcs this time around, fantastic, calm, relaxed, fab recovery, up and about the next morning, even my scar has healed better this time :) good luck xx

Hiya, I had my second 8 weeks ago and found the elective SO much easier than the emergency, despite having a toddler to look after this time too. Spinal was amazing, felt a tingle as it went in but much more effective at giving total pain relief than the epi I had last time. I felt nothing this Rome, no tugging or pulling, it was so relaxed. As they took there time I was in far less pain after, I had no pain at all after day 6. Recovery was amazing, less pain, less tearful and was back driving at 2 week. Back swimming at 3 weeks and bcd at the gym at 5 weeks. Bled for 2.5 weeks afterwards x
