Hi ladies.
Having a bit of a debate with DH.

So by way of background I have one son from my first healthy pregnancy. Got pregnant again in April but started miscarrying in June at 12 weeks. Waited one cycle then started TTC again. Got my bfp a week ago so now nearly 6 weeks. Here in the UK we have a booking appointment with midwife at 8 weeks but no examination or anything mainly just paperwork. We then don't get a scan until 12 weeks. I don't think I can wait that long to know if this one is OK and want to go for a private early scan but dh says no. I know that a scan is only as good as the second it is done and setting a healthy heart beat doesn't guarantee going on to have a healthy pregnancy but I really think it would help me get rid of some of the anxiety.

How many of you had an early scan? And if so how far along were you when you went?

I have one son and am 14 weeks now with my second. I have had 2 losses. With every pregnancy I have an early viability scan (607 weeks). This pregnancy I had another at 9 and another at 12. If it puts your mind at ease, do it. I wanted mine after the time when I normally miscarry (between 7-10 weeks).

I'm in the UK too and had a private scan at just over 7 weeks. I had a loss in Dec and a CP in May, so it was a relief to see the heartbeat. I wanted more reassurance too as I was on a cruise when I was 9-10 weeks where there would be little medical facilities if I had a mc then.

I'm in the US. After my miscarriage, I had early scans with both of my pregnancies (my daughter and my current pregnancy). With each one, I had a scan around 6-7 weeks, then again at 9 weeks (symptoms disappeared with my daughter; several days of bleeding with this pregnancy), and again at 11 weeks (I have a retroverted uterus, so at my 11 week apt both times, they couldn't find a HB with a Doppler, so I got a scan).

personally, I would absolutely do it. It definitely helped put my mind at ease both times. I would have gone crazy waiting until 12 weeks. There are no guarantees, true, but your risk goes down significantly once you see a HB. I would rather know early on if things didn't look good, rather than finding out after thinking things were ok for months.

With my miscarriage, I had a blighted ovum that was found at a 9 week ultrasound. I had no reason to suspect that anything was wrong, so we started telling people because I had made it to 9 weeks without any signs of miscarriage, only to find out at the first scan that it was never viable. I thanked my doctor PROFUSELY for doing the first scan at 9 weeks instead of 12. I never did end up miscarrying on my own (we had to induce it), so I would have gone the next 3 weeks still thinking everything was fine.

Good luck!

Out of curiosity, why doesn't your DH want you to get an early scan?

He thinks that it would make it harder to deal with if we did end up miscarry ing having seen a heartbeat at an early scan. I do understand his thinking but all the same it would be nice to take a bit of this anxiety away. A nurse at our my recommended not having an early scan if we conceived again and he really seems to have taken that on board.

I am really not sure he is going to be persuaded :(

So after 2-3 days of spotting and hardly any symptoms, I can't take the worry anymore and OH has finally agreed to an early scan. They prefer you to be 7-8 weeks so all booked for 12th. Now for a tense week waiting!

Good luck! With both the waiting and the scan!

I had an early scan Thursday and all it is doing is causing me stress. Your right, a scan is only as good as the second one thus early and if you are measuring behind you will only worry yourself like I am doing. I wish we waited for the I week scan instead of doing one at 6 and then 7 weeks.
