Hi ladies,

Seeking some advice about a toddler tongue injury. Yesterday my son was at nursery and he tripped. He fell onto the bottom rung of a climbing frame and put his teeth through his tongue and lip. The lip I don't have a problem with, he did it in the summer and healed fine. The tongue though is a huge concern. We took him to A&E and they had max-vac specialists look at his tongue. As he's so young they wouldn't put him under and give him stitches and told me it would heal on its own. I know I should trusts them and the rational part of me does, but the irrational part of me looks at his tongue and freaks out!!! The end is split and there's this loose bit that sort of flaps. My son only just turned two and has a communication delay, so he doesn't understand when I tell him not to play with his tongue. He keeps pushing it against his teeth flapping it open. It's so horrid! I am so worried the end will come off and he'll be left with a deformed tongue.

Does anyone have any experience with this? Did it heal well? Did it heal completely? How long did it take to heal and stop flapping? I won't worry so much once it all joins back together.

I find myself so squeamish about it! Terrible I know, but lumps, cuts and bruises I feel I can cope with... Just finding it hard to see the end of his tongue hanging off :(

Thanks ladies

*UPDATE*

I thought I'd update the thread in case anyone finds it while looking for similar stories if they have a child with a similar injury.

Well it's been exactly a month now since he hurt himself and his tongue is almost back to normal. The very very tip of his tongue (like the last few mm) still looks a little strange, like it's not quite attached (though it doesn't flap anymore, it just lies flat against his tongue and it's so small you barely notice it unless you study it), but the rest is completely healed. It's remarkable! I have no doubt this tiny last bit will completely heal too, as it's been steadily getting smaller these last few weeks. Most of the cut was healed within a week, but the bit that was flapping on the end has taken a while longer. Understandably! It has been steadily getting smaller and smaller as his tongue healed and now only the tiniest tiniest bit is left. You wouldn't even notice it really. It all went very white for a while, but I didn't panic, as I remembered that injuries in the mouth obviously can't scab like normal wounds and that white means it is healing. I'm glad it's over now! Looking at his tongue for those first few days was horrible!

I got squimish just reading your post! eesh- personally, I would take him back for a 2nd opinion or call for advise. I can't imagine (thinking how that would look in my head) how it would heal on it's own? But I'm no expert!

I do think there is something to mommy instinct- and docs, although they know so much, don't know everything. It certainly cannot hurt to get the reassurance...

Just my two cents though. Hugs hun.

Mouth injuries heal quickly in general because there is so much blood flow to that area. If they weren't concerned, I would let it be, it will heal quicker than you think! My son also had a bad mouth injury when he was around age 2 from falling off his booster chair with his sippy cup in his hand, and fell right on the sippy cup with his mouth. He had a hole in his lip area, and a small gash on his tongue, and they didn't do any stitched on his either. Said with it being such a vascular area, it would heal quickly and stitches would only make him mess with it more than he was already likely to mess with it. His did heal very fast. They also told us to keep his mouth well protected with SFP chapstick in addition to sunscreen on the rest of his skin, as any initial scarring would be very susceptible to sun damage. So that whole summer I always made sure he wore hats outside, and always put chapstick with SPF on him, along with sunscreen.

I would think it should heal ok. Your tongue is unique in that it's the only muscle that isn't attached at both ends. So like any muscle it should heal but if he's playing with it I'd maybe ask for a second opinion but he's liable to end up playing with the stitches they put in it.

The tongue heals incredibly quickly. My husband bit right through his and within a week it had completely healed up. He has a bit of a scar now, but nothing major. That being said, if you are worried it won't do any harm getting another opinion.

My eldest had a really bad tongue injury years ago. The cut was very deal and wide. I was very worried as you could see right inside. He hardly bothered, ate normally by next day and healed within days. Amazingly.

Thanks ladies, what worries me is the bit flapping. I just don't see how it will heal back in place. We're taking him to the GP on Monday to see what they say, though I expect them to take him back to hospital if we're worried. I might take him to the other hospital near us for a second opinion if that's the case. He generally seems okay with it and doesn't seem in pain which is good.

Hopefully it will get a good amount of heal time while he sleeps to reduce the flap size

This is a 5 year old thread, the original posters may not use the site anymore. If you're worried about the way your little one's injury is healing you need to take them to a doctor for a proper assessment x
