We found that Jack sleeps twice as long if he is in our bed, but obviously we can't keep him in there for 6 months with us so we were thinking if a cot would be a good substitute or is it too early?

We have had Hannah in a cot at the side of our bed since she was 6 weeks old. We swaddle her and she has had no problems apart from unravelling herself occasionally but we just snuggle her up again and she goes back to sleep

Actually now is a good time to start moving Jack out of your bed if that is what you want to do. At 2 months the baby is really becoming more aware of their environment, and will respond better when things are predictable and will be begin to form sleep associations.

Start by tracking your baby's sleep cycle this week. Once you notice a pattern, about 20 minutes before Jack is getting ready to get sleepy for a nap, start the wind down routine you decide. Now is the time when he needs to start to learn to self sooth, and learn to fall asleep on his own, without feeding and rocking. You will need to be consistent with the routine, both for day naps and evening sleep. He should always sleep in the same place day and night, and roughly at the same times. Start the routine before Jack is tired, and good naps during the day, mean good sleep at night. When a baby is overtired, they are hard to get to sleep. Also remember he is used to sleeping where is smells of you and your DH, so maybe take a t-shirt you ahve worn and put it in the cot with you.

All this is from my book Baby 411 by Denise Fields and Dr. Ari Brown. It is really good.
