Wondering if any ladies have excessive salt cravings in pregnancy and if everything is OK? I never ever take salt at home cause its suppose to be really unhealthy and causes hypertension and all. My cousin took really lots of salt during her pregnancy and had really bad preeclampsia that she had to give birth at 26 weeks and her baby was slightly less than 1000g when he came out and they had to operate his head to drain fluid and all... I can't seem to eat much at the moment, so I am going through with like 3 packs of crisps with Salt flavor, lots of salt that i even mix salt into my orange juice and coke for dinner..... not sure if its harmful or should i cut the salt out completely?

The first thing I found via google is

Q: Will cutting out salt lower my chances of developing pre-eclampsia?

A: No. While too much sodium is never good, you need salt to help promote the flow of fluid in your body. Talk to your doctor about how much salt is safe to consume during pregnancy.

I dont believe there is a huge connection, lots of us have crisp cravings :)

hmmm i dont know the answer but i have been worrying about this as i am a salt addict in everyday general life, always have been so now im pregnant i've been trying to cut back alot i will speak to the mw about it when i finally get to see her though so would say you should do the same!!

Let me know if you find out anymore though :)

I would defo avoid the salt in your coke and orange though!!!!!

If you don't currently have HBP, don't worry about it. The salt only aggravates HBP if you already have it, it won't cause the HBP. If your Dr tells you to cut down on salt then I'd follow their advice.

Hi sweetie, it's so difficult when you can only eat certain things, especially if you know they aren't exactly healthy. I like my salt too but haven't been adding it to drinks and that actually made me wonder if you might have a deficiency of some sort related to salt that might be causing the craving, I know dehydration can cause it so might just need to drink more, which is odd because salt usually makes people more thirsty! I'm not really sure why I'm even thinking it tbh :/ it just popped into my head, probably not but might be worth asking your doc for some advice anyway, will give you some peace of mind also! Not trying to worry you, from what I do know salt cravings that are a result of something else are usually something very simple! Like drinking more for example. So pleeeeease don't worry more I'd hate to think I'd worried you more! Probably just a pregnancy thing! xxxxx

Hi girls, no, I don't have high blood pressure, usually its 120/60 when I go for my check-ups, sometimes its 110/60 but its still within normal i think!
I don't take and have never taken any prenatals though, all I've been taking is folic acid with iodine, so could that be a cause that I am craving salt? Maybe its a kind of diet deficiency cause I never eat out except for a salad or sandwich for lunches, always cook at home from fresh ingredients with little or no salt and I don't really snack. Bids, great idea, keep me updated on what the doctor says!
