So, we're going for our gender scan on Tuesday, and I'd like to have names for both sexes clear in my mind before then. We're pretty set on a boy's name already, but have been kind of stumped when it comes to a girl's.

Last night, out of the blue my DH suggested Rosebay, adding that we could always call her "Rosie" for short. We both usually go for more traditional, old-fashioned names, so this is a little out there for us lol (our DD's name is Jane!). But the name is growing on me- it actually has a lot of meaning for both of us. BUT, I'm wondering how other people will perceive it. Thoughts? :flower:

I don't really care for it, why not just Rose? That being said, I have never heard it up until this point so maybe that is why it seems odd to me, is it more common where you are?

I think I would need to know the significance and meaning to comment, it's def different but yes Rosie or Rose for short works well with Jane

It's the first part of a flower name, the native name in the region where my DH and I met, that both of us love. My husband is also a botanist, and he's very into plants lol.

ETA: It's not common here, either, which is why I'm hesitant.

I think it's a bit too weird for my taste and doesn't really go with your daughter's name for that reason. I like Rosie though and think it goes really well with Jane! :)

I think Jane & Rosie are very sweet together!

I would prefer Rosalie, nn. Rosie - but since OH suggested Rosebay (and for the significant reasons you stated above) I think Rosebay would be cute. I say go for it. It's the name of a plant, and isn't made up - so that should help you feel more confident in the choice.

Maybe Rose. With a bay included middle name. Like Baylee. Or some other one I can't come up with.

I like the idea of Rose as first name and Bay as middle name. It's a nice reason why your hubby picked so I say go for it

I like it! But if you aren't sure you could have Bay as a middle name. My daughter is Sadie bay

I really like it. The fairy in my profile picture is the Rosebay Willow Herb fairy.

I love it! I haven't heard it as a name before but I think it works, especially as you have Rose/Rosie as nn options. Flower and plant names are popular here and I hear more and more uncommon plant names used now with parents trying to find something which isn't overused so I think it will seem less unusual to your LO's generation.

It's cute. Only downside I see is correcting misspellings and spelling it out.
(I've never really minded it with my own name!)

I feel like I've heard it somewhere before, but can't think where :)

I say go for it. It has nickname potential (Rose or Rosie), it isn't common and it has meaning for you. What name could be more perfect?

I like that you found a name that is meaningful to you. I think you should go for it!

I had to google that to know what it was. I had no idea that rhododendrons had another name. My husband and I wondered the same about the name Azalea and joked about the name Rhododendron as azaleas and rhododendrons are close relatives. But Azalea has grown on us and I think we're going to go for it if the baby turns out to be a girl. I don't know how others will perceive it initially; however, people will get used to it. Even if they balk at it initially, after they get used to it being your little girl's name, it won't matter anymore. It will just be part of who she is.

Edit: In terms of names going together, I never understood why that mattered. Your kids are their own people. Their names don't have to sound any particular way together.

I wasn't sure when I read your first post but by the end of this thread I'm a convert! Somebody else said it perfectly - it's pretty, not made up and has meaning for you. Lovely!

Jane and Rosebay. I like it x

I like it. Reminds me of Rosemay, which I heard once. It is different, but I think it's one of those names that grows on you :flower:
