Hi there, I recently found out I'm pregnant (I'm 5 week) and I'm a smoker. I'm trying to quit but with everyone smoking around me I'm finding it very hard! Any tips or help?!

Every cigarette I have I regret as I know it's damaging my baby but I can't stop and want to so badly :(

A x

I would see your GP asap, they should be able to help. I cut down from 10 or so a day to four and had quit fully by 7 weeks with my first (thankfully due to sickness) I've not smoked since.

agree with the pp, your GP could help you, there are many methods available to quit smoking, from hypnosis to books (seems silly but they do help).
also, it may as well happen spontaneously that the cigarettes start to disgust you as the pregnancy goes on (and then quitting is so much easier!)

happy and healthy 9 months to u!

You'll get free help/medication to stop on the nhs so go speak to your GP ASAP x

I have no experience with smoking but would speak to your midwife about quitting. Best of luck. :hugs:

sorry go of topic but Tori i saw your signature change, congrats on your new baby!!! he looks perfect!

edit: Sorry Shannon!!! i noticed i typed in your daughter's name instead of yours!!!! silly me!!!

I agree that speaking to your doctor is absolutely necessary.

In the meantime, go pick up some regular chewing gum, some suckers/lollipops, and little hard candies to suck on. When you feel the urge to have a smoke, do something distracting (take a quick walk), and pop a candy in your mouth. Drink a full glass of water. Take some deep breaths. Do ANYTHING, but have another cigarette.

At 5 weeks gestation, this is a critical time in your LO's development. If you need to NOT hang out with your smoker friends/relatives for the time being, I promise that it will help. It's hard to quit when everyone around you is smoking...try to find a way to not expose yourself to it at all, and it does become a bit easier.

Take it minute by minute! :hugs:

..i would also add to the physical distractions the pp mentioned, that you ask yourself WHY do you NEED to smoke? what is the reason for you to pick the cigarette up emotionally, psychologically, what satisfaction it gives to you? does it calm you, does it make you focus your thoughts, does it make you take a mental break from the things around you, or are you a social smoker, or you smoke out of boredom or habit and so on...

also, ask yourself when are you mostly likely to light up? maybe make a little list of concrete circumstances and emotional states that lead you to smoke and try to find a pattern to it. this means noting both the time of the day (ie. after breakfast/meals/evening), location (at school/work/at home/with friends) and your emotional state (nervous/upset/bored..and so on)... soon you should see what leads you to the next cigarette the most, and once you know why, you can also try finding a strategy against it.

smoking is technically unnecessary. but it is an addiction. and like all addictions, besides the minor physical part (nicotine withdrawal), it has a strong psychological component, and becoming aware of it is the first step towards the real quitting. coming to understand WHY you NEED to smoke makes the entire act of smoking pretty senseless.

I smoked for about 5 years before I found out I was pregnant with this one, I had like 6-8 cigarettes left in my pack. I smoked them (over the course of the next 4-5 days) and I didn't buy myself another pack. I still buy my OH's when he needs me to on my way home from work, but I have no desire to buy myself any.

I do have to say there are days where I feel like I need one (mostly because of a really stressful day at work). But I think about how sick I feel by just being around the smell, and it curbs it.

If something like that would not work for you, go to your doctor and talk to them. Don't quit cold turkey but work yourself down. And your doctor can help you better with it.

Hi hun I was a smoker before I fell pregnant with my first boy. I started to use the nicotine invisi patch and it was amazing. I had loads of smokers around me but I did it. It took me about 2 weeks with patches till I would get up in the morning and forget I even had one on, before I knew it I didn't even need one! Go see your GP and you will be able to get them prescribed for you. Good luck x

O/T! Congratulations on number two! I remember your name from when I was pregnant with my son :flower:

I quit by writing down every cigarette I had, it made me much more aware of how many I was smoking and I felt myself wanting to go longer and longer inbetween cigs, it really does help. Also find something to distract your hands with like eating mints or knitting or ready a book, even posting on here! I found part of the addiction was the routine I was in, certain things I did whilst smoking. So instead of getting ip and going downstairs for a cigarette, have a shower instead or treat yourself to your favourite breakfast.

Good luck, you can do it! x
