Hello,

I've just been diagnosed with an over active thyroid.

Me and my husband had been planning to start trying for a family next month (on our wedding anniversary), something we'd been preparing for over the last 4 months.

My doctor has told me that this is now not an option, and we may have to put it off for more than a year. He has asked for me to return to long term contraception, something which at the moment I have decided not to do.

I am still waiting for my appointment with the specialist, but I wanted to see if anyone else has been through anything similar? Are there any other options which would enable me to receive treatment for my over active thyroid and move forward with our family plans as normal now, rather than years down the line?

Thank you in advance for any help.

Laura.

I too have an overactive thyroid.....its not tooo bad...but def produces symptoms.
I havnt spoken to a doctor about it... But im a naturopath and take my own steps to try and control it.

Did he say why u cant try??
I have fallen preg with an overactive thyroid before,..
I had a serious problem that made me lose the baby later on, but it was not related to the hyperthyroidism...

Thyroid problems make the first 12 weeks of pregnancy high risk of miscarriage which is why he might suggest you go back on BC. Now its not a certainty that you will miscarry if you happen to get pregnant while you are still out of balance. however the hyperthyroid condition is likely affecting your cycles and possibly ovulation anyway which will decrease your chance of conceiving period. My advice would be to get the levels stable before you get into serious TTC mode. NTNP might be ok if you are prepared to deal with the stress of a high risk first trimester. I say this because I have a thyroid problem that I just let sit and wait and I now feel like I wasted the last 6 months of TTC when I just could have gotten treatment and been 6 months into it by now and on my way to TTC again.

I was over active.took ages to fall pregnant and ended up losing the baby, started trying again and the meds just weren't getting my levels right,so we decided the best option was having my thyroid removed,I did fall pregnant but unfortunately again it wasn't meant to be
Good luck in whatever you choose to do

i have an overactive thyroid, that i was only diagnosed with when i was actually pregnant (though we'd always suspected it) and it's calmed down now.
i had severe morning sickness throughout my pregnancy (weighed 100lbs at 5 ft 8 pre pregnancy and had dropped down to 90 by week 9) but the pills i was given helped that a little. i had unexplained bleeding at 11 weeks that i was convinced was a miscarriage and had pre eclampsia by the end of it. after a very quick labour (1 hour 40 min as i was induced after my waters broke) i had a few tears and lost a fair amount of blood.
but i'm now sitting next to a beautiful almost 2 year old girl who has made every second worth it. AND we're trying for number 2. my thyroid has calmed down a lot since then lol and though i cant gain any more weight still, i am trying to lose some as I'm now about 140lbs lol)

I'd say don't be too down about it. it's great that they've spotted it. speak to the specialist and see what they say. and if you decide you do want to ttc anyway, now that they and you know, it'll be easier to keep an eye on it. you may also decide after seeing your specialist that you want to do the treatment first, and it may help you in the long run.

good luck :)
