I'm an American that will be joining my British husband in the UK in a couple of months (hopefully, provided that all goes well with this visa application!)

So the name that I have fallen in love with for a girl is "Shelby." It's a tribute to my father who loves cars, and it would really mean a lot to me to give this name to our daughter. My husband is unsure... he doesn't outright hate it, but has told me it is a very unusual name in the UK, particularly for a girl. He's concerned that she will have to go around spelling it for everyone her whole life, and that people will mispronounce it. I dunno... my name is "Heather" and I often still have to spell it for people! :dohh:

Thoughts?

I've heard the name in the UK, I only know one Shelby so it is unusual but I quite like it. Unusual names aren't unusual where I live... If that makes any sense!

It's unusual name for the UK, but I think it's a straightforward enough name that people won't misspell or mispronounce.

Good luck with your visa application! I'm an American living in the UK, though I've lived here for 11.5 years and am a dual citizen now.

I like it, I've never met anyone with the name but I've heard it on American shows. It's good to be different without having to go obscure!

I know 2 shelbys, it's not common but it's not too out there either. I like it.

I don't think you'll get big issues with spelling, as others have said it isn't a common name here but most people will have heard of it before.

I know 2 shelbys, like others have said it's not common but it's not unheard of x

Thanks so much for the feedback, ladies! I agree that it's different, but not so obscure that people can't pronounce it. That's what I love about it! I'm going to try to make the case again with my husband, now that I have some backers! :winkwink:

I don't know any Shelby's but I have heard the name before. Uncommon but not crazy!

Ive heard it before so dont worry! My daughters called Evangeline - Rose and loads of people I know say things like "thats an old name why did you choose that?" and "I havnt heard of that before but i like it" I like unusal names :) <3

I love shelby, and know only one person with that name. I never felt it was out there. I also know a boy called Sheldon

I've heard the name Shelby a few times over here so I don't think it's completely unheard of. Unusual still but I don't think anyone would find it odd or anything :flower: My younger DD is called Astrid which is quite unusual over here but in my experience most people have still heard of it

I don't know any Shelby's but I can't see how you could mid pronounce it tbh. Its quite a straightforward say it how you see it type name x

I instantly thought of cars (and I know nothing about cars lol). I've never known anyone with that name, but why should that matter, I work in a school and I live in an area of high immigration so there are loads of different names (polish names, pakistani names, african names) and I have never known of anyone to be made fun of because of their name.

As for the spelling issue, my name is Jos and I still have to spell it for everyone, my step-dads dad still calls me Josh and it's been 8 years !

ive heard it twice here. its certainly not unheard of but its not in the top 100 or anything. i like it though :-)
