UK vs US

I love the clothes ones

UK tights/ US pantyhose
Do you have a different word for stockings?

We have tights and pantyhose. Pantyhose are sheer and usually nude colored. Tights are thicker and usually opaque and come in darker colors.

Stockings are stockings, if they stay up without a garter belt though they are thigh-highs.

LOL at suspenders, pretty much only men wear suspenders here! Braces go on your teeth. What do you call orthodontic braces in the UK? or are suspenders and orthodontia called the same thing? :)

Our thigh highs are hold ups and we call orthodontic braces the same thing, we just like to give words more than one meaning.

Yes braces go on your teeth in the uk too.

Iv got one... What about ur period? Iv never heard the term af until i came on bnb. Do u girls really call it af or aunt flo in real life ?
In the uk we call it a period. Or most people will say 'iv come on'. Gross men might even call it 'on the blob' lol.
Oh and also the dot at the end of a sentance is a full stop lol.

my nan and older relatives in the UK used to say aunt flo apparently - they also used to say they had the painters in

To me, a "period" seems like such a clinical term (like "menstrual period"). If I was at the doctor's office, I would tell them the date of "my last period". But when talking casually to my sister or something, I say "aunt flo showed up" or something of that nature.

We end our sentences with a period though, no full stops!

I think aunt flo is more of an internet thing. I never heard of it either until 13 or 14 years ago when I start going to message boards.same with "DH"

Haven't read through the whole thread, but I have a new one I hope! A fanny! In the US we sit on our fanny & in the UK a fanny is a woman's "very private parts," or so I am told by dear friends of ours from Cornwall.

So a fanny in the USA is a bum? Do you use the word bum too? Or ass? I don't think ill ever be able to use the word 'fanny' for bum when I move out there!

We usually say butt. We do not use bum, but we do use ass in adult conversation. Someone can be an ass also, so it's a swear here.

i havent had a chance to get through all the pages yet, but I had to note a difference of term from within Canada lol... We live in the west but my friend is a Newfie and she asked me the other day if Anabella takes a dum tit... LOL wha?? Newfoundland... explains it all right there :haha: i love my Newfie friends! Never cease to make me laugh!

I love the UK term "faffing".. lol I use it all the time now to try train my sailor lingo.. I tell DF to quit faffing around lol it works and still gives me the "f" satisfaction haha

Our bum bag is their fanny pack lol!!

Not sure why because they don't go anywhere near your bum!

Ok, because the kids know it as their bum, I'm always saying 'look at your little bum' or 'where's your bum bum?' So ill have to start using the word butt. I've realised in this thread just how much difference there is in the things we say and words we use and how we use them. The poor kids are going to get so confused, just as they were learning one way to speak they are going to learn all new American lingo!

Oh yes hahaha completely forgot that one! when i first saw this on american tv shows I was like wth

Oops just saw you said this too :haha:

I think they're more like fanny packs - in our sense of the word :haha:

even U.K. date (mm/dd/yy) is backward ;) kidding!
in fact, I think they got it right. I think we write it such a way because we are used to writing like this : March 16, 2013 (I wonder that comma is there because it is really written as 2013 March 16???)

That ALWAYS confuses me! Especially on here!

For example, someone has their LOs birthday as 01/10/12, I assume they were born in January, but in the UK it's really October.

I'm used to DD/MM/YYYY here. It looks weird the other way around!

Well when I say dates, I say like March 15th, 2013, not the 13th of March 2013. Both are correct, but we just say it one way here and thus the abbreviation MM/DD/YY makes more sense than DD/MM/YY.
