Hey Ladies! Not sure if this is in the right place or not or if its been asked before, but I have a quick question about under-wired bras. I was told by one of my friends that it's not good to wear them when pregnant because it stops the milk from coming in properly. Is this true? Did any of you guys have any trouble with wearing them or not? Any experiences/info you ladies have is really appreciated! x

I always wear an underwire bra, and coincidentally, did not have enough milk when my son was born. No one had told me about this during my pregnancy, and I only found out when I went to a bf clinic and the nurse there told me to switch ASAP.

Don't know if the bra is the reason, or if its just a coincidence, but I hope that helps. :)

I told my MW that i was planning to bf and she didnt tell me to change or anything, but I'm a little concerned now... Oh well... just means I need to go shopping... again! My OH must love me spending all the time

My maternity bra came today and it was underwired needles to say its going bk !!

I have read that underwires are a no no. Right now I am living in a sports bra....and rocking the uniboob look....shudder.

I've been warned against them but with 34Fs they look bloody awful in bras without wires :(
I thought it was just because they did something to the shape though I hadn't heard about the milk thing.

Ugh tell me about it! I'm 38F (was a C cup before bb came) and I'm pretty sure they're gonna get bigger :hissy:.... Maybe I'll leave it til the last few weeks and then switch to sports bras...

Wow they've grown! I was a 30dd and am now upset because yours have grown so much more than mine!!

Is it safe to wear underwired bras during pregnancy?

Sally Sago answers:

There does not seem to be any concrete evidence to show that wearing underwired bras during pregnancy may be harmful. However, there appears to be a potential risk. Many midwives and retail outlets advise against purchasing underwiring in pregnancy. The reasoning behind this advice appears to be that the rigid wire may interfere with the natural changes in size and shape of the breast during pregnancy. This may obstruct the increased blood flow or "squash" of the developing milk duct system, causing pain, discomfort and possibly mastitis.

Changes to the breasts start much earlier than most women expect. By the sixth week of pregnancy tenderness and slight enlargement has already taken place. It is not uncommon for the breasts to become "lumpy" in the first three months as the milk duct system begins to develop. The dark skin around the nipple (areola) becomes more prominent and darker in colour. The veins beneath the skin are more visible due to the increase in blood supply needed for growth and development of the breast, in preparation for feeding your baby later on. There is a gradual increase in size during pregnancy and, on average, the breast will increase by 5cm and 1400g.

These changes show why it is important to wear a comfortable, supportive bra. Depending on the size of your breasts before pregnancy and the rate of growth, some women need a maternity bra sooner than others. Many retailers nowadays offer a free fitting service to ensure you get the correct size. You need a comfortable bra which supports the increasing weight of your breasts and does not compress the breast in any way. You may need to be measured two or three times during your pregnancy.

A good maternity bra will have wider shoulder straps than a fashion bra, support panels and adjustable back fastenings to allow longer use as you increase in size.

So the secret is in the fitting. If you do wear an underwired bra at any time in your pregnancy make sure that the wire does not put pressure anywhere on the breast and don't sleep in it. It is much more likely to dig in to the breasts when you are lying down, possibly causing problems.

Is it okay to wear underwire nursing bras?

Susan Condon, lactation consultant
Many breastfeeding consultants don't recommend it. Underwire nursing bras have been linked to plugged milk ducts and mastitis. If the underwires press on the milk ducts, they can interfere with your milk flow, clogging the ducts, which then become infected.

Even if you find an underwire nursing bra that fits well in the store, it won't take long for it to fit poorly when it's repeatedly worn and washed. I don't know many mothers who hand-wash and line-dry their fine washables after a day of leaking milk. You're lucky if you have time to unfasten your bra, put it in a lingerie bag, and toss it in with the rest of the wash!

A soft-cup nursing bra provides much more support than you might realize. Look for one with non-stretch straps made by a company that specializes in nursing clothes and accessories. For the best fit, ask a salesperson to help you. Plugged milk ducts and mastitis are painful and can put you in bed for several days — so why tempt fate by wearing an underwire bra?

As long as it fits correctly it is fine. I have no choice but to wear underwired bras as they don't make wirefree in my size. The place I get my bras from have assured me that as long as the wires are not digging into the breast tissue and sit nice and flat against your ribcage there is no problem. They are specialists in larger sizes and say that they have not known any problems with any of the pregnant women they have fitted.

I wore under wired bras through out my pregnancy and midwife never said a thing and she knew i was going breastfeed. My milk has come through fine though..

I have no idea why it's not good to wear inderwired, but mothercare lady told me off, so I have some lovely support bra's (what pray do they support?) Anyway I think she said it damages the tissues, but I have no idea, what that means and if linked to milk??

How soon should you make the switch ?? (Pre BFP was a B cup so not having the troubles that some of you are! FF cup - wowsers!!!!)

Underwires that squash the boobs when the milk comes in (so not generally during pregnancy but after the birth) can cause mastitis which is quite uncomfortable and nasty. I wore wires until about 34 weeks when they became too uncomfortable from my bump squashing them into my ribs. I'm a 34F while pregnant by the way. I would definitely say make sure you wear a comfortable and well-fitting bra, be it with or without wires, during pregnancy but avoid wires for nursing bras. My sister has the same size boobs as me and she has worn wires throughout both her pregnancies without a problem. My SIL gets mastitis and never wears wires during pregnancy.

Underwire will not cause mastitis and constriction alone unless the bra is poorly fitted. Even a too-small and uncomfortable sports bra could cause it.

I'm a 36DD atm and 8 weeks pregnant. I used 2 b a 38F when I was a couple of stone heavier and I'm scared I'm going 2 get that big again :( hated it :( I got a non-wired bra the other day from M&S as I read this about not wearing wires, but it looks awful that I'm not wearing it! I'm planning on breast feeding so if anyone can find any decent maternity bras out there for big breasted women please let me know!!xxxx
