I'm currently well will be tomorrow 28 weeks pregnant. Please don't open and run.. need advice etc??!?!

Today I got a letter from my local hospital and Maternity Trust. When I opened it; it was about SHIP Trial: Self-Hypnosis for Intra-partum Pain. A self-Hypnosis control during labour.

It's run though the University of Lancashire and I've been picked at random to be invited for the studies. After reading what it involves. It's just basically the same as me paying for a self-Hypnosis course. Just its for free ;).. due to it being research I've got to fill in a few questionnaires so does my birthing partner who is going to be OH. This is before the labour and a few weeks after.

I showed OH and he was against it from just looking at the SHIP title. He said I am to stubborn and that it will not work and when it comes to the pain and labour all the night visits to the sessions and listening to the CD every night will go out the window..

I know I've not got the strongest pain thresh hold and I hated period pains and one of my fears and worries (like most ladies on here) is the labour and contol of the pain also the unknowing of the whole experience.

I think if we did the course it's no loss because I want to go to antenatal classes and even if the course didn't work whilst I was in labour I know I'm going to mean ladies due around the same time and we can share experiences..

just wondering if anyone else is doing a self-Hypnosis course and should I just leave the questionnaires/information lying around for OH to try and look at?

If it wasn't for the qeustionaire that he has to fill out I'd just fill and send it off but he has to agree to the research/trial too :(

I've just purchased a hypo-birthing CD in the hope that it with help me with my fifth labour. I've heard vaguely about courses and think that if I was offered them for free I'd probably jump at the chance. I can't see that it would hurt anyway and it may give you a wonderful birth experience. :)

I'd be chomping at the bit if I was offered that for free! Like Minnyb I've got the Natal Hypnotherapy CD for pregnancy relaxation and used the CD for Birth Preparation with my daughter. Two days before I was due for induction they ended up scheduling me for a c-section so didn't use the techniques. But I did use the CD for recovery and as I'm having a c-section again this time I've bought the CD for that too! That's how good I think they are. Regarding self hypnosis you just have to remember that perhaps it might not work but that doesn't mean you have to refuse pain relief. You see how far you get and then decide what is right for you at the time. Believe me, when you are in labour (I went into labour prior to my section) you'll do whatever you need to do to get through it.

Best of luck!

The hospital rang and I have been invited for the trial too, so I am going to give it a go! Can't do any harm! Might see you at the birthing centre! :-)
