I finally had my first scan at 16 weeks along. Baby is okay, measuring right on target and kicking around on screen like a little show off :) But it's upside down. I'm sure it's fine but there wasn't much on Google so I thought I'd check with you girls. Is this normal?

I have no advice but wanted to say that baby looks super cute... my baby was facing my spine at my U/S.

They really like to wriggle around in there, so its not an issue. Mine did a backflip while at an ultrasound lol.

Have no advice but wanted to say I see u had your scan at LRI... My step brother is having his baby there too in June, I'm having mine at queens in notts :) xx

At that gestation your baby will be doing somersaults still so don't worry. It's not until around 36 weeks that they need to be head down and even then if they're not they can still change position.

Thanks for your replies :) I knew I was being silly worrying but it's nice to put my mind at rest. I think it must be moving loads, this morning I woke up with a huge hard lump on one side and the rest of my belly totally flat. Ten minutes later it had wriggled back to normal. So creepy/cute lol!

That's cool that you are both expecting at the same time! :)

my mother actually had me in LRI which was why I thought it'd be nice to deliver there. I'm a student and I live between Leicester and Nottingham as I'm a student at University of Nottingham. I was given the option to birth at QMC, but I'll be home in the summer so chose Leicester.

Do you live in Notts? I like QMC, I have medic friends that do all their training there and they say its a good hospital.

Mine was the same at 12 weeks, but this one is such a wriggler it barely sat still to have a photo taken!! Which is why bubba still looks like a blob instead a baby!! (Cutest little blob I've ever seen though!) :haha:

No I don't live in notts I live in Grantham and the hospital here closed it's maternity unit. I have heard good things about qmc hence my decision, my sis had her baby at lri and they were fantastic. All the best to you for the rest of your pregnancy :) :) xx

Yeah my baby was the same had a scan on Wednesday. There's so much room for then to move around so they can really float in any position hah . I found it strange though but my doctor sad everything was fine my baby was literally balancing on its head haha didn't even look comfy hah

Ours was upside down at our 15w1d too (my avatar pic has been flipped!). He flips around ALL the time, I know for sure now because I can not only feel him but SEE him at the thin skin by my belly button!

Like the other ladies have said, it's not a worry at this point. At my 22 week scan, my baby was laying transverse (that is, left to right rather than up and down). She still spends about 90% of her time transverse at the bottom of my uterus!

As they get bigger they have less room and tend to move to the head down position, but doctors only tend to worry when you're a few weeks out from your due date. Baby's just enjoying the swimming space for now, I think!

Hey a at my 16 week scan both my twins were laying face down! I have my 20 week scan on Wednesday I'm hoping they have turned - face down doesn't look comfy lol

That is exactly how mine was laying at my 20 week scan, apparently it's normal and that some babies just like to lay on their bellies.
I haven't had any problems with her staying in that position either as she is head down now :)

Yes it's fine. Ours was upside down at 16 week scan and when I said "how unusual" to my consultant, she said that not all babies are 'belly up' but that in most positions, the sonographer can manipulate the angle of the pic so they look that way.

At this early gestation they are actually in all kinds of positions.

Very cute pic!x

It means baby was trying to peek at your hoo-ha. Maybe plotting its eventual escape.

Just kidding, of course! I agree with the other lovely moms who've answered - baby's just moving freely at this stage. :)

My baby lays transverse most of the time. At my last scan baby was also laying on his or her side with one arm under the head and the other arm waving back and forth.

update- from laying face down mine have now moved to breech and are facing each other- both heads just above belly button :)

also punching and kicking each other- I feel the love already lol

that sounds pretty normal

my baby girl moved into all kinds of positions in one sonography session and sometimes the sonographer would point out 'that's the perfect position she should be in when you're giving birth"
