My dear friend went in for a transadominal ultrasound and she is approximately 8 weeks 4 days from her first day of her last period. She knows that she concieved on the night of the 22nd of August which would make her 6 weeks 2 days. Does a Transadominal ultrasound pick up a heartbeat this early? The nurse told her that the baby is not viable and to schedule a D&C soon. I read that it can't register a heartbeat until later and a transvaginal ultrasound is the best way to get accurate age of baby. Please anyone have any ideals???

First of all I wouldn't go by what the nurse says, Id wait for a dr's opinion, ecspecially for something that drastic! Ive been told yes, it's not easy to measure the fetus that early unless done by tvs. Also, the heart may just be starting to beat at this stage. If the measurements are pretty close, then I dont understand why the nurse would jump to such a horrible conclusion!

I think that is too early. They picked up my babys heart beat about 9 weeks with tv ultrasound. Tell your friend not to worry until she has reason to.

We were able to detect heartbeat at exactly 7w (5w after conception) via transvaginal u/s (I had an early u/s at that time due to some light bleeding). It is different for everyone, and I would certainly get an opinion from a doc as it is still quite early on...Best wishes for your friend.

Oh, she's 8w4d not 6w2d? What did the scan measure her dates at?

They got Ava's heartbeat (192) at just about 7 weeks, so yes it is possible, but if they don't find it that does not mean that anything is wrong, i mean they usually more than not don't find it that early, this is what i was told..
:hugs:

Oh, she's 8w4d not 6w2d? What did the scan measure her dates at?

8 w 4 days from her first day of her last period. She only had a malfunction with her birth control on the morning of August 22nd and had used bc the rest of the month so she know she got pregnant on the day of August 22nd so she gestionally would be 6weeks 3 days...

Medically speaking, she would be 8+4 even if she knows her conception date. My baby was picked up at 8 weeks, but like the other poster said, it was 9 weeks for her. I would DEFINITELY tell her to get a second opinion before doing anything drastic!!

There are so many factors like the date she actually conceived (doesn't necessarily happen within minutes), when she actually implanted, and the power of the ultrasound machine. We saw a heartbeat at 7 weeks, but it was a transvaginal scan. I am in shock they didn't do a tv at 8 weeks. I think your friend needs a second scan first!

Well she did get a second transvaginal ultrasound yesterday and the baby did not have a heartbeat! Thank you for all your responses...

Aww, that's so sad. Sending strength to your friend to get through this difficult time. :(

I'm so sorry to hear that, I was really hoping for the best!
